Goddamn! Why won't that unholy bitch just sink?
Dennis Silva, referring to HIMS Amagi, Maelstrom

Tabby: We gonna use iron from that Jap ship, ain't we!
Isak: Hally-looya! We're gonna get our boilers back...but Goddamn! Jap iron? It ain't decent! (*Beat*) Sir!
Captain Reddy: Settle down! Steel is steel. Besides, remember all that scrap we sold the Japs back before the war? Maybe Amagi used to be a Packard!
— Talking about plans to refloat and repair USS Walker, Maelstrom

I'm going to see you get a raise out of this...or a promotion, or something! Take the rest of the day off. You're still technically on leave anyway. Go hunting or have a beer! Kill something; you'll feel better!
Lt. Cmdr. "Bernie" Sandison to Silva, Distant Thunders

Fred Reynolds: (referring to markings near the patched bullet hole in the nose of the plane) What's that?
Jeek: You bring plane back full of holes from bad guy guns, that fine. Lots of work to fix, but fine. You shoot hole in own plane (points to patch and NO painted next to it), not fine. From where you sit, numbers say NO. Maybe you remember not to shoot own plane no more.
Fred: That wasn't my fault, damn it! They were shooting at us, I was shooting at them! All I had was a damn pistol!
Kari-Faask: You get carried away. You almost shoot us down yourself!
Fred: I did not! Get rid of it!
Jeek: (grinning) No.
Fred: Who's in charge here, you or me?
Jeek: You in charge of division, but I in charge of plane.
Rising Tides

Give me two, three days, this "Naancy" fly just fine. You lucky you got me an' this crew 'stead o' those on big ship. We know shit!
Jeek, Rising Tides

Where I came from, in the Philippines, we heard about the Japs hitting Pearl Harbor at about oh four hundred and knew we were next. We all ran out and jumped in our planes, waiting for the word to go after `em, our bomber guys itching to hit Formosa. What we didn't know was that everybody in charge was running around like... akka birds with their heads cut off. Damn MacArthur! Anyway, time went by, the sun came up, and we sat there, all morning long, cooking in our cockpits. A few planes took off chasing ghosts, but most of us finally climbed down and took naps in the shade under our wings. That's when the Japs hit us, right in the middle of the day, and you can't imagine a more tragic, screwed-up mess."
Orrin Reddy, Pass of Fire
