The battlefield fell silent at Ace's shout. All eyes fell on him, waiting to see what he'd say. And he had many things to say. That this was his screwup, and that the old man shouldn't lead more of his crew, shouldn't lead himself, to their deaths just to save him. That maybe… everyone was right. That he really was a demon child who didn't deserve to live.
All of that and more was about to spill out of his mouth when he suddenly found himself unable to speak. He looked at Whitebeard and his disappointed frown, at his crewmates and their determined expressions, and knew to his bones that they wouldn't listen. That they would come for him anyway.
Byleth: "You were in love with her. Sorry, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said that.”
Aelfric: "I do hope I wasn't that obvious to her. I never wanted her to know, not once I realized she loved your father.”
Byleth: "... Really? You seem... okay... with that.”
Aelfric: "I loved her. I always have. When she married Jeralt, and I stood there as one of her witnesses, I loved her; when I woke up this morning, I loved her. All my life, I have loved her. But this is true, too: she did not love me.”
Byleth: "I... am sorry?”
Aelfric: "Don't be. You are not owed the love of another, no matter how deep your own feelings run. And, loving her, I wanted what was best for her- what made her happiest, what she wanted. Love does not have to be a jealous thing, though few realize that. How could I say I loved her, if that love simply meant I wanted her to be mine?”
