A long time ago, but somehow in the future...

"This is a story about twin planets, Mu and Bacula, far away from our own galaxy."

"This story happened a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. It is already over. Nothing can be done to change it. It is a story of love and loss, brotherhood and betrayal, courage and sacrifice and the death of dreams. It is a story of the blurred line between our best and our worst. It is the story of the end of an age. A strange thing about stories—though this all happened so long ago and so far away that words cannot describe the time or the distance, it is also happening right now. Right here. It is happening as you read these words. This is how twenty-five millennia come to a close."
—From the intro of Matt Stover's novelization of Revenge of the Sith

Qwark: Space. It’s huge. So huge, in fact, that if you lost your car keys in it, they would be almost impossible to find. Luckily for Ratchet, Captain Copernicus L. Qwark was on the case. His mission: Rescue the Lombax’s one and only friend. Yep. Without Clank, Ratchet was alone in the universe. Alone, alone, alone!
Ratchet: (annoyed) You realize this ship has an ejector seat, right?

"A long time ago, In a Janitor's closet far far away."
Space Quest Slogan

"Star Wars takes place "a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away," if you are slow and didn't quite get that the first time I mentioned it. Yes, George Lucas was such a mastermind, he didn't have to set his story in the future, which is clearly a Sci-Fi cliché.
Instead,
Star Wars takes place in the past, completely ignoring every law of science and common sense about technology there is to ignore. The movie also takes place in an alternate galaxy, because it seems like it should. Really, look at the Milky Way. BORING! Unless you throw in an extra dimension or two, you just can't make our humble galaxy interesting."

"Somewhere in space, this may all be happening right now."
Original Star Wars: A New Hope trailer

"No tales of the past can compare to this romance of the future"
Another trailer for the same movie, getting a bit confused.

Gavin Free: It's actually blown my mind that it's way in the past and really far away. They should have put that in the beginning of the movie!
Michael Jones, Geoff Ramsay, Jack Patillo, Ryan Haywood and Matt Bragg: THEY DID!

Even though it looks like it's the future
It's really a long, long time ago
When there were knights
And they got into fights
Using sabers of light
Please remember
Even though some things so familiar
They're not really on Earth
Yeah, it's a galaxy far, far away
Alien DNA walking 'round every day
And no one notices
