Year Two: Ash's Orange Islands and Johto Journeys

Clair Interlude

  • After the Indigo Conference, Clair continues to take on challenger after challenger.
  • A trainer named Meliae defeats Clair using a Mega Beedrill, and earns her Rising Badge.
  • As Meliae exits, a local rich girl from Blackthorn comes to earn her first badge, boasting that she knows how to defeat dragons.
  • Clair is unamused by the girl's attitude, and brings out a Magikarp, defeating her two Pokémon easily.
  • The day continues as Clair continues to take on challengers, having to deal with many Sore Losers. One particular challenger named Gregory almost wins, but ends up losing to one critical hit, and he ends up depressed over it.
  • That night, Clair visits the local Mr D's Bar. She finds a guy trying to hit on Meliae, and recognizes him as one of the challengers who lost to her.
  • Clair tells the guy off, and he leaves in a huff, much to Meliae's chagrin, who though he would do for a one-night stand before leaving for Azalea to pick some Apricorn Balls from Kurt. Clair replies that she could do better than him and the two begin chatting over drinks.
  • Clair spots Gregory by the bar drinking and still depressed over his defeat. Clair however assures him that he's a good trainer and is capable of beating her, encouraging him to stop drinking and take a rest so he can fight at his best the next day. Meliae even offers to help him celebrate if he wins.
  • Gregory accepts and leaves, while Clair and Meliae continue to share stories over drinks.
  • The next day, Gregory wins his rematch and gets his Rising Badge.
  • Clair is called in by the elders of the Dragon Clan: her grandfather Javelin, granduncle Yari, her father Trishula, and her uncles Halberd and Sibat.
  • The elders aren't happy because of the way Clair defeated and humiliated the daughter of one of the prominent families in Blackthorn, which also affected their reputation and relationships with the other prominent families. Clair argues that she was just doing her job and she can't go easy on people.
  • The elders leave this aside for a moment, and talk to Clair about another matter: namely, that they want to secure a future heir for the clan. Since Lance hasn't married yet and his job puts him at risk, that only leaves her.
  • Clair argues that she and Lance are still young and there's no need to hurry, but the elders argue that she too is running out of time to find a suitable husband, despite being only 22 years old. It doesn't help that her dating life hasn't gone well due to men in Johto being extremely old-fashioned.
  • The elders decide to try and arrange a marriage for Clair, much to her bemusement.
  • The days pass and the elders send proposals to several prominent families to get someone who wants to marry Clair.
  • While brushing her Dratini and Dragonair and talking about her frustrations, Clair receives responses from Falkner's father Walker and Morty, who politely decline.
  • That night, while checking out her email, Clair receives a videocall from Drayden, whose family was called during their weekly dinner about the Dragon Clan's marriage proposal.
  • Drayden reveals that the deal fell through due to one of Drayden's sons being too physically weak, and another having recently married another man. After this, he requested that none of them comes back.
  • Clair apologizes for her family's actions. Seeing that she too is very annoyed at their actions, Drayden proposes that she takes a vacation to get away from them.
  • Clair points out that she can't do that without good reason, so Drayden offers to provide one. There are rumors about a Shiny Druddigon in Cave Island and he'd like to capture it, but a new great-grandson will be born soon and he can't miss it, so he offers Clair the chance to go and find it.
  • After discussing the matter with her family, Clair travels to the Decolore Archipelago.
  • Shortly after her arrival in Cave Island, she runs into a trainer talking in strange slang, who just defeated an opponent with a Deino.
  • The guy introduces himself as Gray and shows off the Unova badges he's won. Clair quickly spots the Legend Badge, meanind that this guy defeated Drayden, as well as many others of the strongest Unova Gym Leaders.
  • Before Gray leaves, Clair notices something familiar in him, beyond a superficial physical resemblance to Meliae.
  • Clair passes by a corner store, and sees some faces in the cover of a trainer magazine, recognizing them as several of the competitors in the latest Indigo Conference. She notices many of them share physical traits with Gray and Meliae.
  • Clair begins to get a lay of the land. While doing so, she's attacked by a Scolipede, so she calls her Kingdra to blast it with a Hydro Pump.
  • Later at the Pokémon Center, Clair investigates on the Internet more about Druddigon to see where she could find them. The noises of a battle going on in the Battle Club next door prompt her to go and check it out.
  • The battle is going on between Gray and a girl named Kendra. Gray wins, and after he poses and continues to speak in his strange slang, Clair leaves.
  • The next day, she begins to explore the caves in search for the Shiny Druddigon, using her Dragonair's ability to produce light to lit her path.
  • Inside the cave, she finds someone using Flash, and sees Gray approaching with his Deino.
  • After some bantering about their clothes, Gray mentions that he too is trying to find the Shiny Druddigon, mentioning someone named Emmy who also had one.
  • Clair quickly tells Gray to "find another memento for [his] girlfriend", since she doesn't intend to give up the Druddigon. This remark angers him, and Clair realizes she must have pushed a button she shouldn't have. Both of them release their Pokémon and start a battle.
  • A group of Abra suddenly teleport in and just as fast as they appeared, they teleport away along with Gray. Still confused, Clair continues her search for the Druddigon.
  • Half an hour later, Clair finds the Shiny Druddigon inside, and comes back out five hours later having caught it.
  • The next day, Clair is on a ship back home. She then spots a Tentacruel in the water, and a green light appears over it.
  • Gray and his Mienfoo fall off of the light, which then dissappears. Clair decides to go rescue them using her Gyarados.

Cynthia Gaiden

  • Professor Carolina recounts how she met Cynthia at a party, ten years after they first met.
  • Cynthia meanwhile takes a call from the U.T.P. She rejects their request for her help.
  • Cynthia is glad the weather has stabilized after the Shamouti Incident.

Clair Interlude

  • Clair faced legal troubles for letting out a Gyarados near people, and is now considered Persona Non Grata in the Decolore Islands.
  • Javelin invites Clair to watch some league matches together, and assures her that she did the right thing in saving that boy, no matter what.
  • Javelin then tells Clair about Gray's backstory, about how he used to be part of a gang that ended up getting caught in something that wiped them all out, including his girlfriend Emmy. Clair figures that's why he got so angry about her comment before. Javelin comments that Gray acts and speaks the way he does as a way to remember and honor their memories.
  • Javelin adds that further investigation revealed that the guys who got convicted for the murders of Gray's old gang turned out not to be the ones responsible, but Gray might not even be aware of it. He also mentions that the green light she saw dropping them off was probably a Celebi.

Clay Interlude

  • Clay helps out a boy by providing the money needed to save his eyes.
  • At a bar, Clay encounters Pan. Pan challenges him to battle after hearing Clay call himself King of the Mines.
  • After the battle, Nurse Joy tells both of them off and confiscates Clay's pickaxe.
  • An hour later, local police ask for Clay's help to deal with a situation at the docks.
  • Meanwhile, Pan is frustrated that he has yet to find the Bloodliner King.
  • Pan decides to go to Kanto, where strange events had occurred. Odd behaviour of Pokemon at Gringy City, a weird storm off the coast of Kanto, at the Orange Islands, and a surge of rookie born during the Bloodliner Baby Boom that are very talented. He then felt a horrible feeling from the direction of the docks.
  • Clay battles the crooks. He then encounters Lovrina of Team Cipher.
  • Her Shadow Delcatty defeated half of Clay's team and the entire police force.
  • After his Golurk helped the others escape, he realises the ship has left port and he's on his own.
  • In desperation, Clay orders Excadrill to use Brick Break to send Shadow Delcatty flying. It hits Lovrina and pushes both into the water.
  • Several weeks later, Clay recounts the story to Alder.
  • Clay is glad he won't be hit with homicide-related charges after police testified his use of force was reasonable.
  • Alder brings the topic to Pan.
  • Alder says that Pan Used to Be a Sweet Kid, but has become obsessed with finding a man whom he believes kidnapped his little sister right from the cradle, which matches another, similar incident with almost the exact same circumstances as well as the Striaton Incident.
  • Pan believes the man who kidnapped his sister is the Bloodliner King, and Alder states this corresponds worryingly with the rumours he has heard.
  • Meanwhile, though believed dead by Unovan authorities, Team Cipher managed to save Lovrina, who is currently in critical condition but will live.

Frax & Velvet Interlude

  • Frax and Velvet are trying to find a gift for their mother Jasmine, since Mother's Day is approaching. Velvet suggests that they buy her a dress, but Frax doesn't know what to get.
  • The twins notice their mother has been working on night shifts at the mall to get extra money, leaving her less time to rest and to spend with them.
  • The next day at the Pokémon Trainer School, Professor Kukui is explaining about Oricorio and how they change forms with the nectar from the flowers that grow in the meadows of each island. This gives Frax an idea for a gift for their mother.
  • Frax tells Velvet and the others about his idea: making an Oricorio flower bouquet, with all four different types of flowers. Velvet dismisses it, suggesting that they buy an ancient vase, since their mother loves antiques, but Sophocles brings up the prices, quickly shutting down the idea.
  • Velvet accepts Frax's idea, but there's still the issue about how they will get to the rest of the islands to get the flowers, since Melemele Meadow only has yellow flowers, and they need three more.
  • Everyone looks at Kiawe, who quickly deduces they want to ride on his Charizard to take them to the other islands. He promptly refuses because he needs to work on deliveries.
  • The next morning, Frax and Velvet convinced Kiawe to take them along, and they prepare to depart.
  • Before they leave, Frax senses someone close to them, but upon looking closer, he doesn't find anyone. The trio and the Rotom Dex quickly hop onto Charizard's back and take off.
  • As they arrive in Akala Island, Kiawe has trouble in getting Charizard to land, and he ends up overshooting the Meadow quite the distance. Upon looking closer, the trio notices a Munchlax tagged along for the ride by grabbing hold of Charizard's tail.
  • Kiawe reminds them that they can't let Munchlax wander around in the island, lest the Aether Foundation finds out they left a Pokémon in a foreign environment. Velvet suggests that they take him along for the time being, since they have other things to do.
  • Frax notices that Munchlax seems to like the flowers they brought along, so he gives him some. In turn, Munchlax guides them to the Akala Meadow, where they pick the flowers they need.
  • The group later goes to Ula'Ula Island, and then goes to Poni Island for the final flowers.
  • As they land, Kiawe warns them to be careful with Poni Island's wild Pokémon. Frax assures him that "nothing will go wrong", causing Velvet to chide him because that's guaranteed to make everything go wrong. Kiawe promises to come to pick them up in twenty minutes or so.
  • The twins go to Poni Meadow. While Frax and Munchlax pick the flowers, Velvet stays on guard, in case they get attacked.
  • Frax gets the flowers and goes back to Velvet. Apparently, everything is OK and they can return home, but then they get attacked by a large group of wild Pokémon led by a very angry Leavanny.
  • A battle ensues. While the twins' Pokémon fight bravely, the wild ones are too strong and too many for them. Even Frax's Z-Move is not enough to defeat Leavanny.
  • Frax tries to buy time to get Velvet to perform her own Z-Move, but his Pokémon are quickly defeated. Munchlax steps up and decides to fight.
  • Munchlax manages to get a lucky hit with Metronome, summoning a Water Pulse, but when he tries again, summoning a Blast Burn, Leavanny steals it using Me First.
  • Frax and Munchlax manage to evade the stolen Blast Burn, which hits the wild Pokémon behind them and destroys part of the canyon.
  • Frax has the Rotom Dex scan Munchlax's moves, and then he has Munchlax use Odor Sleuth and Lick on Leavanny.
  • Leavanny gets paralyzed, so Frax has Munchlax use Tackle and pin it to the ground. The other Pokémon begin attacking them.
  • Frax tries to protect Munchlax, and then a loud, ominous cry is heard in the distance, causing everyone to stop for in fear.
  • Velvet completes her Z-Move, which begins sucking in everyone in the vicinity, giving them the chance to escape.
  • Before they leave, they hear again the ominous cry, and Frax sees a shadowy figure atop a mountain, sending chills down his spine. Velvet reminds him they have to escape, and then Kiawe comes with Charizard to pick them up. They leave the island.
  • As they leave, they notice the bouquet they had gathered is completely ruined. When Frax suggests that they go back and gather more flowers, Kiawe and Velvet make it clear they're not going through that again.
  • Munchlax then pulls out of his fur an old vase, similar to the ones Velvet wanted to buy for their mother before. They realize he probably picked it up from the garbage he was playing with before when they arrived.
  • Velvet grabs the vase, and realizes they have the perfect gift. She then says "This can't go wrong!" and then a strong breeze almost causes her to drop it in open sea. Frax quickly mocks her for what she said before to him.
  • After returning home, the twins restore the vase, and they have it ready to give it to Jasmine in Mother's Day, making her really happy.
  • Jasmine then gets a call from her boss, but Velvet answers instead. They explain that they're going to cover her during her night shift that day so she can relax and enjoy. While she objects at first, Frax and Velvet insist, and she ultimately relents.
  • On the way to the mall, the twins find Munchlax, who wants to go along with Frax. Frax then catches him.
  • A few days later, the twins are telling the rest of their classmates the story of their adventure. Hau then arrives with a bag of Malasada.
  • Upon smelling the Malasada, Munchlax jumps on Hau and tries to take it for himself. The two begin fighting over it, until Munchlax wins and eats it, bag and all.

Hala & Hau Interlude

  • Hala investigates why Tapu Koko wanted to give Ash a Z-ring and researches him. He discovers that Ash found several Z-crystals, has many lookalikes, and is just starting his Johto Journey. He then receives notice that his latest Grand Trial challenger is ready.
  • Frax apologises to Hau for his Munchlax eating his Malasada by offering to buy Hau Malasada. Frax regrets this due to the big bill he will have to pay due to how much Hau ate. Frax, Hau and Velvet then remembered that Hala's Grand Trial was going on.
  • The three arrive at the Grand Trial just in time to see Hala win against the challenger, Kawika.
  • Professor Kukui arrives to talk with Hala.
  • In private, Kukui brings up the possibility of establish Alola's own Pokemon League:
    • Hala protests that would make them officially a T.A.T.O nation.
    • Kukui points out Alolans already keep Pokemon in Pokeballs, and that the Trials are comparable to the Gym Challenge.
    • Hala says they also work with wild Pokemon just like the Ranger Union, and is unwilling for Alola to lose neutrality, since their neutrality provided both sides with a place to deal with each other diplomatically.
    • Kukui brings up the decreasing number of Trial-goers, and the decreasing number of people able to become Island Champions and Trial Captains, citing himself and Guzma.
    • invoked Hala continues to be unwilling because the Trials are an important part of Alolan culture, and the establishment of a Pokemon League would change it, making people upset, citing how the ending of a minor custom of not letting girls eat bananas caused issues.
  • Back with Hau, Velvet & Frax, Hau and Frax are killing time with a Pokemon Battle with Velvet refereeing. Hau mentions how his dad left, which Hau believes is because he was the son of a Kahuna. Upon hearing Hau say his dad was strong, Frax then asks whether it's Hau's dad or his grandfather he wants to surpass.
  • The next day, after class, Hau asks Kukui about his Kanto Journey. Kukui says it was great and asks Hau whether Hala told him about his Pokemon League idea. Kukui leaves as soon as he learns that's not the case.
  • Meanwhile, Hala received a visit from Kawika, who informs him that he's dropping out of the Trials, saying he didn't even want to try in the first place but his family insisted. Hala accepts this, but after he leaves, Hala despairs once more at Alolan youth turning their backs on their heritage.
  • Over dinner, Hala and Hau talk about their day. Hala asks whether Hau thinks the Trials are obsolete. Hau answers that a League might be appealing, but the Trials are still the Trials. Hala says he didn't bring up a League.
  • Hau admits he asked Kukui about the League because he wanted to know if they were better. He wanted to know if his father was stronger than Hala.
  • Hala begins getting angry, and demands to know whether Hau would prefer the Trials or the Leagues. Hau gets terrified, and runs away. Hala realises his mistake and chases after him.
  • Looking for Hau, Hala realises the situation is just like when his son left, and runs straight to the harbour, where he finds Hau about to leave.
  • After a short confrontation where Hala quickly defeats Hau in a Pokemon Battle, and they both manage to calm down and talk.
  • Hala sees Tapu Koko watching them, and realises there's only one solution to Alola's problem.
  • Hala agrees to Kukui's proposal of establishing a Pokemon League, with some modifications to allow for the incorporation of Alola's Trials into it. Hala then sends a letter to his son, not knowing if it would allow him and his son to reconcile, or if it would even reach him, but he still decided to try.
  • Later, at a Bug Catching contest, Hala and Hau see Velvet and Frax volunteering at the event for extra credit after failing their assignments.

Cipher Interlude

  • Pleased by the results Lovrina obtained, Nascour asks on Evice's behalf when his Shadow Pokemon will be ready. Ein replies the process takes time and they must emphasise quality over quantity.
  • A contingent of Cipher Peons, led by Exol, including Shawn, return to Unova to obtain a second wave of Unovan Pokemon.
  • Exol uses Shadow Mawile to help capture Pokemon. At first, things go smoothly, before Shadow Mawile goes berserk.
  • Shawn manages to calm it down, but not without injury to himself. Exol tells him to tend to his wounds.
  • Shawn finds his way to the place where he told Jeff he'd go to Orre.
  • He sees Jeff again, but Team Cipher arrives as well. Forced to make a choice, he chooses himself, killing his own friend and Jeff's Pokemon, the now Dewott Mizutaro, is taken.
  • Back at Team Cipher headquarters, Nascour and Ein talk about Shadow Mawile going berserk and Shawn calming it down. Nascour brings up the possibility of having the Peons undergo the Shadow process as well. Ein advises against it because Cipher does not have the resources for it.
  • Shawn meanwhile is shocked at what he did, before Exol comes into his room and gives Shawn a reward for his performance.
  • After Exol leaves, Shawn despairs that it is Mizutaro, and breaks down crying.

Looker Interlude

  • Looker and Blake investigate reports of poaching activities.
  • Looker thought the search was fruitless, but Blake finds a valuable clue, Dewott fur, which corresponds with Jeff's disappearance.
  • Blake suspects a connection to Orre. Interpol higher-ups agree with Blake's assessment.

Guzma Interlude

  • Plumeria tells Guzma of an incident that resulted in injury to two Team Skull grunts.
  • Guzma smiled at the noise his grunts make, proof that they were having fun. Last time they were quiet was when Wally went on a journey despite not being fifteen.
  • Upon seeing the injuries on the two Team Skull grunts however, his mood soured and he demands to know who did this to them.
  • The grunts answer it was "freaks in white", and they're at the Ula'Ula meadow.
  • Guzma goes to deal with those who hurt his grunts.
  • Cipher Peons are in the meadow, under orders from Lovrina to explore all the Alolan islands.
  • They encounter Guzma and they battle. The leader of the Peons, Naps, brings out Shadow Teddiursa. Guzma uses Golisopod:
    • After using First Impression to land a solid blow, Teddiursa injures Golisopod enough to trigger Emergency Exit.
    • Guzma brings out Ariados. It is also defeated but Naps is concerned by the battle not being as easy as he thought as Lovrina told him it would be easy to take on a Gym Leader.
    • Guzma brings out Masquerain, which Intimidates Teddiursa, surprising one of the Cipher Peons. The other Peon brings out Pinsir to increase their odds.
    • The Pinsir is not a Shadow Pokemon, and is in fact angry at the humans who caught it. It turns on its Cipher masters.
    • Pinsir then interferes in the Teddiursa versus Masquerain battle and it becomes a three way battle.
    • Pinsir knocks out both Teddiursa and Masquerain.
    • Naps recalls Teddiursa and he and the other Cipher Peons flee.
  • Realising Pinsir is still there, Guzma brings out Golisopod and it uses First Impression. Guzma throws an Ultra Ball, and after it captures Pinsir, Golisopod ensures Pinsir can't escape by using its six arms to keep the ball closed.
  • Guzma returns to base, and Golisopod and the Skull Grunts show Pinsir around.
  • Guzma calls Lusamine about Team Cipher.

Jane Jackrum Interlude

  • After graduating and becoming a full-fledged Pokémon Ranger, Jane Jackrum is congratulated by her grandfather and mother, but is nervous about being able to live up to the former's legacy and the expectations everyone has about her.
  • Jenkins hands Jane his Mega Ring and Pidgeotite so she and her own Pidgeot can use them, to give her a boost of confidence.
  • Jane tries to Mega Evolve her Pidgeot, but it doesn't work, and she doesn't understand why.

Sanpei Interlude

  • In the Kalos Ninja Village, Sanpei looks at the ancient scroll telling the story of the legendary Hero Greninja. He writes a copy in a scroll and keeps it to himself.
  • Sanpei's brother Ippei arrives to tell him that he has to be ready for his big day: today is the day he'll be allowed to leave the village.
  • Sanpei goes off to train with his Froakie.
  • Another ninja, named Satoshi, arrives, and they discuss about the responsibilities of becoming the village chief, as well as the legends about the Hero Greninja.
  • Sanpei then senses that intruders are coming, and they both go off to investigate.
  • A group of Cipher Peons are walking around trying to gain access to the village. Satoshi decides to attack them, using his Double Team bloodline to create clones and get their attention.
  • They manage to get one of the Peons to tell them they're coming to steal eggs, which they deduce are the Froakie eggs descending from the Hero Greninja. Given that they're outnumbered, Sanpei suggests that Satoshi sends a clone to the village to get help.
  • Exol is with his Peons, watching around the perimeter. Amongst them is Shawn.
  • Satoshi appears with his clones and a fight ensues. While they have their attention focused on him, Sanpei and his Froakie attack them with Frubbles.
  • Exol calls for his Shadow Mawile, but recalling what happened in the Unova mission, he has one of his peons call in his Houndoom to use Smokescreen and retreat.
  • Satoshi follows them, but Shawn stays behind to deal with Sanpei.
  • Shawn attempts to talk Sanpei out of fighting, but he refuse. Calling in Sir Thorn and Selvaggia, another fight ensues.
  • Shawn feels tempted to bring in Mizutaro, but ultimately decides not to. Sanpei commands his Froakie to use Frubble on him and leaving him glued to a tree.
  • Sanpei and Satoshi meet up again, having lost the trail of the other group of Cipher Peons. They're discovered by their Commander, whose name is Capriccio.
  • Another fight ensues. Capriccio gains the upper hand, and offers to spare Satoshi's life if he answers his questions. Satoshi refuses.
  • Capriccio notices something on Satoshi's face, and all of a sudden, he orders his Gliscor to cover him in Sludge, with the clear intention of killing him. He then stabs Sanpei in the chest with his own kunai and leaves him to die as well.
  • Sanpei waits until they're all gone, having been saved by the scroll he kept on his chest pouch and approaches the pile of Sludge with his Froakie. To his great relief, Satoshi and his own Froakie are still alive, but very weak.
  • Sanpei has to choose between saving his friend or going off to warn the village, and ultimately chooses to save Satoshi.
  • The rest of the ninjas arrive, and they're chasing off the rest of the Cipher Peons, after being warned by Satoshi's clone.
  • Sanpei's brothers, Nihei and Ippei arrive, and they take Satoshi to get medical attention.
  • Afterwards, Sanpei discusses with his brother Ippei, on whether he did the right thing or not in choosing to save his friend. Ippei assures him that he did, and he'll be ready to be chief when the time comes.
  • As the sun is setting, everyone in the village is ready to see Sanpei off.
  • Satoshi ponders that things are going to be boring without his friend around.
  • Capriccio gives his report to Nascour. While they couldn't steal the Froakie eggs, they succeeded in their primary goal of getting information about Bond Phenomenon from the photos they took from the scrolls.
  • Nascour promotes Capriccio to Admin for his success, and gives him a new mission, this time in Alola. Nascour says a scouting party was defeated by "Kahuna Guzma".
  • Capriccio ponders on his encounter with Satoshi, disturbed at having seen his face, but he assures himself that he's gone for good.

Jane Jackrum Interlude

  • A few weeks after her graduation, at the Almian Ranger Union HQ, Jane is ready for her first official mission. Top Ranger Wendy assigns her to act as a bodyguard to a Flying-type researcher named Rosebay, who works under Professor Hastings.
  • Jane meets Rosebay that night, who reveals to have specifically requested for her, given that Jane is good for handling Flying-types and can help her with her research.
  • As it turns out, Rosebay also expects that Jane, being Jenkins Jackrum's granddaughter, should be able to Mega Evolve her Pidgeot too, but Jane reveals that she still can't and doesn't know why.
  • Jane and Rosebay fly to Vien Forest, where Rosebay conducts her research and Jane spends some time training along with her Pidgeot. During that time, they meet and befriend several different Pokémon.
  • Unknown to them, a Celebi is following them closely.
  • One night, Celebi appears in their tent, waking them up. After giving Jane a rather cryptic warning, especially about "the Shadow", Celebi disappears, leaving them confused.

Kiawe Interlude

  • In Akalan Mountain Peak, a challenger is ready to take the trial under Captain Iolani.
  • As the challenger leaves off to undergo the trial, Kahuna Olivia arrives to tell her that she plans to appoint a new Trial Captain, and wants Iolani to show him the ropes.
  • At the Melemele Pokémon Trainer School, Kiawe ponders on how he will graduate at the end of the semester, and how he's going to miss his classmates.
  • He remembers the day the twins Frax and Velvet Lono arrived for the first time, when they helped him drive off a gang of thugs.
  • He also remembers that they were given Z-Rings by Tapu Koko, many battles he had with them, and many adventures and misadventures along with his other friends, Mallow, Lillie, Sophocles and Lana.
  • After school, Kiawe goes to meet them at the battlefield, to have a battle with Frax.
  • Kiawe calls in his Fletchinder, and Frax calls in his Rockruff. Fletchinder wins.
  • Kiawe calls in his Marowak, and Frax calls in his Munchlax. Frax uses a Z-Move: Breakneck Blitz with Munchlax to win this round.
  • Kiawe calls in his Turtonator and Frax calls in his female Pikachu.
  • Frax tries to hold out for a couple minutes before using a Z-Move again, despite the fact it's risky and could potentially kill the user.
  • Before Frax unleashes his Z-Move, a Ride Mandibuzz arrives with Iolani, interrupting the battle.
  • Iolani approaches Kiawe to inform him that he's been chosen as Trial Captain, and requests that he comes with her.
  • As they fly, Iolani recognizes Kiawe's Ride Charizard as the one who belonged to Kiawe's grandfather, Koa. Turns out Iolani knew him. She also asks him about Frax and Velvet.
  • When they arrive on the trial site, they find it vandalized with graffitis all over the place.
  • A Pikipek arrives and tells Iolani what happened, and she decides that they need to clean up the mess and punish the ones responsible.
  • Meanwhile, south of the Battle Royal Park, a pair of Skull grunts, a male named Odlaw and a female named Sketch, are eating ice cream cones. Odlaw is showing off a stolen PokéNav he got during his time in Hoenn.
  • Sketch notes that she can generate paint from her fingers.
  • Kiawe and Iolani arrive, and confront the grunts over the vandalized site. They openly admit to it.
  • Odlaw goes on a Motive Rant about how it's the Trial Captains fault that they're acting the way they do, and insults Kiawe's grandfather, making him and Iolani angry.
  • A fight is about to start, but Plumeria arrives and knocks Kiawe out for trying to attack the grunts.
  • Kiawe wakes up, having been taken by Iolani to get healed. She managed to drive off the Skulls, and then tells Kiawe a bit of her life story, specifically how Kiawe's grandfather helped her after her mother died.
  • In Canalave City, Naps and Capriccio talk about the information gathered about Z-Moves.
  • Naps then recalls that in their last mission, Capriccio threw a boy with black hair and red eyes into the canal and blasted him with his Ferrothorn until he stopped coming back up for air, to what he only replies that "some people are not supposed to exist".

Jane Jackrum Interlude

  • One morning after waking up for training, Jane notices the forest is too quiet, more than usual, so she goes to wake Rosebay up so they can go investigate.
  • They find an injured Combee and Taillow they had befriended before, as well as a Staraptor. After healing their wounds, the Pokemon guide them deeper into the forest.
  • Jane and Rosebay encounter a Cipher force led by Gorigan poaching Pokémon, and they overhear them talking about Celebi. Realizing they're outnumbered, Jane picks up her radio to call the HQ for reinforcements.
  • Unfortunately, the Cipher Peons discover them and a battle ensues, with Gorigan sending out a Shadow Primeape and Hypno. Realizing she has no choice, Jane attacks the Peons with her Bloodliner powers, and quickly calls Rosebay and the Pokémon to hop onto Pidgeot's back to escape.
  • Gorigan uses his radio to call for an order, and has several Pokémon use Gravity to cause them to fall when they fly over the Cipher force's camp.
  • Jane and the others survive the fall with some injuries, and when she regains consciousness, the battle restarts.
  • Rosebay takes advantage of the chaos to release the caught Pokémon so they can help them. A Peon tries to stop her but is stopped by Staraptor.
  • Jane gets some of the released Starly to use Screech. Another Cipher Peon tries to stop them, but Taillow attacks her Voltorb and it accidentally uses Explosion on its own trainer.
  • A Cipher Peon sends out a Victreebel against Jane, who tries to strangle her using Vine Whip.
  • Pidgeot tries to help her, but finds herself unable to due to Gravity. The culprit is a Baltoy next to a Peon.
  • The Combee from before tries to save Jane to no avail, and ends up evolving to Vespiquen. The battle's tide begins to turn into their favor.
  • Gorigan arrives and sends in his Shadow Pokémon. A Shadow Storm attack sends Jane flying, and upon falling she breaks her arm.
  • Pidgeot stands before the Shadow Pokémon to protect Jane, but they gang up on her and beat her badly. Gorigan orders attack after attack on Pidgeot, until Jane finally snaps and her Mega Ring begins to react to Pidgeot's Mega Stone.
  • Pidgeot Mega Evolves, and quickly begins to make short work of the Cipher Peons one after another, as well as the two Shadow Pokémon.
  • The Peons want to retreat, but Gorigan refuses to. Suddenly, the Ranger reinforcements arrive, led by Barlow, Crawford, Luana and Top Rangers Sven and Wendy.
  • Gorigan wisely decides to retreat, using a Slowking to teleport away, but leaving behind several Peons. Knowing they can't escape, they surrender themselves.
  • As Wendy congratulates Jane for a job well done, the Cipher Peons from before attempt one last ditch effort by outing her as a bloodliner, calling her a "freak" and an "abomination". Rosebay attempts to lie to protect her, but Sven steps in to shup them up.
  • Sven tells the Peons that even if they said the truth, he'd have no problem with Jane being a bloodliner at all, plus with the things Cipher has done with Shadow Pokémon, they have no right to call anyone an abomination. The Peons are taken away.
  • The day after the battle, before leaving, several of the Pokémon in Vien Forest come to see Jane and Rosebay off, with some of them wanting to come along: Taillow and Vespiquen with Jane, and Staraptor with Rosebay. They agree, and they all fly back to the Ranger HQ on Mega Pidgeot.
  • News of Jane twarting Cipher's plans quickly spread, much to Principal Lamont's surprise on Jane being able to Mega Evolve her Pidgeot.
  • Reporters appear at the Jackrum residence, asking if Jane is really a bloodliner. Jenkins replies by asking if someone has a problem with that.

Gladion Interlude

  • Gladion and his Umbreon rest after completing a job with a Totem Slowbro around a campfire. He decides to read his Alphanean Chronicles to kill his time before going to sleep.
  • The next morning, as he walks around town, a sailor spots him and upon seeing the state of his clothes, challenges him to a battle.
  • Gladion calls out his Midnight Lycanroc and the sailor brings in a Blastoise. Lycanroc wins.
  • Afterwards, the sailor explains that he has a son who is always ripping his clothes and he can't stand seeing that. Umbreon steps on Gladion's foot to get him notice that his socks have holes, which prompts him to ask the sailor to patch them up.
  • After getting his socks fixed, Gladion goes off to a hill to continue his reading. While he's arguing with Umbreon about it, a splashing sound gets his attention.
  • He looks at the beach below the hill, and spots a trio of girls in swimsuits playing in the water. At first he pays no mind to them, until one calls another by the name Lillie. Upon looking closer, he recognizes her as his sister.
  • Right behind him, another girl, who turns out to be Velvet Lono, appears, and thinks that he's spying on her friends down below. He tells him that he's not, and while she seems to buy his story, she challenges him to a battle, and he accepts, proposing a three versus three.
    • Velvet starts out with Cutiefly, and Gladion calls in his Golbat. Cutiefly wins, albeit just barely and ending up pretty hurt.
    • Gladion call in Umbreon and Velvet brings out a Magnemite. Umbreon wins.
    • For the final round, Velvet calls her Meowth, and Gladion brings in Lycanroc.
    • During the battle, Velvet's Meowth evolves into Persian.
    • Both opponents call for their Z-Moves to end the battle. The resulting explosion sends trainers and Pokémon flying away.
  • Velvet is found by her friends, while Tapu Koko finds Gladion, deciding to drop him off somewhere.
  • Back at their home, Velvet tells Frax what happened with Gladion. She then begins reading her own Alphanegan Chronicles, also noting that Frax dropped them after the second book for some reason.
  • Frax explains that the reading got creepy after a while, as he couldn't help but notice the similarities between them and the protagonists of the book. He also recalls having seen a few lookalikes of them in the Indigo League: Ash, Red and Ritchie. Velvet just shrugs it off.
  • Gladion and his Pokémon wake up in the middle of the forest. Suddenly, a Bewear shows up and grabs them, taking them away.

Jane Jackrum Interlude

  • One week after the battle at Vien Forest, Chairperson Erma calls for a meeting with several Ranger leaders and Professor Hastings. Given what happened in the forest, this is the first incident involving Cipher that ended up with no casualties on their side. They conclude this was in part thanks to Jane being a Bloodliner as well as having a fully evolved Partner Pokémon capable of Mega Evolution.
  • The leaders decide that they have to make their Rangers stronger, by being able to evolve their Partner Pokémon to their final stage, Mega Evolving them if possible, and perhaps even have more than one. They also extend this to being more inclusive to bloodliners.
  • At the Kingdom of Rota, Lady Ilene gets a newspaper showing the changes in the Ranger Union from the Mew living in the Tree of Life. The Duchess is intrigued by this development.

  • Mitsumi, now an assistant to Professor Rowan, is delivering a package to Twinleaf Town while also researching Lake Verity.
  • She accidentally angers an Onix, and is forced to rely on her Starly after leaving Infernape at Professor Rowan's.
  • A boy named Hareta comes in and calms Onix, his friend, down. Mitsumi notices he wore nothing but tattered shorts, has spiky hair and red eyes, and has z-shaped birthmarks on his cheeks.
  • Hareta shows her the way to Lake Verity.
  • After being prompted, Mitsumi explains she and Rowan are researching the three major lakes of Sinnoh.
  • Hareta is confused, believing there to be four. That's what his dad told him.
  • Upon both their stomachs rumbling, Hareta asks his Pokemon friends to find lunch. They do so. They then notice Onix hasn't come back yet and look for him.
  • They find him, and Onix attacks them in a berserked rage. Hareta and the others are shocked. Mitsumi tries to use one of the starters she was delivering, but Onix's attack separates her from the package.
  • Mitsumi tells Hareta to get to the package and use one of the starters. Hareta brings out Piplup.
  • After some initial problems, Hareta manages to get Piplup to obey him and they defeat Onix after Piplup notices and breaks an odd device on Onix.
  • Mitsumi notices the Galactic logo on the device.
  • They arrive at Lake Verity.
  • Mitsumi contacts Professor Rowan. Hareta greets Rowan, and it turns out Rowan knows Hareta and his father, Kaisei.
  • Since Hareta is fifteen, to Mitsumi's surprise, Rowan lets him keep the Piplup, knowing the trainers in Twinleaf wanted a Chimchar and Turtwig.
  • Rowan then asks her to accompany Hareta as they explore the lakes since Kaisei is an unrivalled expert on Legendary Pokemon.
  • Mitsumi decides that after delivering the starters, they shall go to Jubilife City for information.
  • A Galactic Grunt witnesses the above, hidden from view. He reports back to his superiors on what he saw.

The Wild Boy From Sinnoh - Chapter Two

  • Hareta and Mitsumi arrive in Jubilife City.
  • Hareta quickly becomes lost in the crowd and is separated from Mitsumi, and begins looking for clues about his father on his own, causing some disorder and property damage along the way.
  • From a rooftop, Hareta spots a Pokémon battle underway in the Joy Plaza, surrounded by a large crowd.
  • As it turns out, a trainer named Park is the current undefeated champion of the plaza and taking challenges from anybody. Hareta steps up to challenge him.
  • When he throws Piplup's Poké Ball, he accidentally hits Park between the legs. Piplup comes out and that leads to an awkward situation.
  • Park brings out a Gible, and the battle begins.
  • Piplup refuses to listen to Hareta, causing them trouble when Park's Gible begins using Draco Meteor.
  • Hareta calls for a Bubblebeam to try and stop the Draco Meteor, covering the field in smoke from the explosions.
  • Hareta orders a Peck attack. Piplup misses Gible in the middle of the smoke, but instead hits Park and begins pecking him mercilessly.
  • Park gets fed up and decides to call it quits, giving Hareta some money so he just leaves him alone.
  • Hareta uses the money to buy himself and his Pokémon some food. Piplup is still angry at him, and refuses to eat. Hareta insists that no matter what, he's still his friend.
  • Two Galactic grunts approach Hareta, telling him they're hosting a tournament and they want him to take part. Hareta agrees and follows them.
  • Mitsumi continues to look for Hareta, following the trail of property damage he left on his wake. She finds him, but she spots the Galactic grunts taking him away and realizes they've got trouble.
  • The grunts take Hareta to an abandoned warehouse, where they reveal their intentions, as well as many captured Pokémon they have. Hareta and his Pokémon begin to fight them.
  • The grunts call their friends to overwhelm Hareta and his Pokémon, using Mean Look to hold them in place and prevent them from escaping.
  • Piplup, seeing Hareta fights to protect him despite the odds, decides to join the fight as well.
  • Hareta and Piplup manage to turn the tables around, and some of the grunts decide to make a run for it. However, the entrance is blocked by a fire. The responsible is Mitsumi, and the grunts recognize her.
  • Mitsumi's Infernape uses Flare Blitz to finish off the remaining Pokémon. Some of the grunts try to escape using an Abra to teleport away, but then Oreburgh Gym Leader Roark and several Officer Jennies show up to aprehend them.
  • Thanking Mitsumi and Hareta for their help, Roark explains that there have been many incidents with people dressed in Team Galactic's uniforms, and they've been investigating them.
  • Roark sees something familiar in Hareta, who reminds him of his old colleague Kaisei. Hareta and Mitsumi explain they're looking for him and ask Roark if he knows something about him. Roark says that he does, but he has some pressing matters to attend in Oreburgh, so he invites them to accompany him there.
  • Meanwhile, the Galactic grunt known as B-2, who was the only one to escape arrest, reports to Charon about what happened. Charon orders him to keep an eye on them for the time being.

Looker Interlude

  • Looker catches up with Nanu on Poni Island.
  • Looker shares his worries about being obsolete, telling Nanu about how two young boys who joined Interpol, Blake and Koya, seem to be better than him. Looker says the mission with Koya was a few days before he arrived at Poni Island:
    • Looker & Koya were visiting Zero about the disappearance of Newton Graceland.
    • Zero shares that Newton met Kaisei before he disappeared months ago.
    • Upon learning Zero was overworking his Pokemon, Koya gets angry, before Looker forces him to calm down.
    • As they leave, Looker tries to berate him for losing his temper but Koya replies Looker isn't a trainer and he has no say on the matter, before declaring he's in charge of the case.
  • Nanu points out to Looker that based on his stories, what Looker is really worried about is not that he's obsolete, but that he failed his duty to help the world such that kids like Blake and Koya had to step up to fix what Looker failed to do, and gives Looker encouragement.
  • After Looker leaves, Nanu thinks about the "tourists" asking about "Kahuna Guzma".

Jane Jackrum Interlude

  • Several weeks after the leaders of the Ranger Union decided to be more inclusive of Bloodliners and become stronger in general, Jane enters her home.
  • Talking with her mother, Jane realises the reason her initial attempts at Mega Evolution didn't work was because she was so focused on trying to achieve Mega Evolution that she forgot to focus on her bond with Pidgeot. She chastises herself for missing something so important.
  • At Jolanka's request, Jane recounts the story of how Taillow and Vespiquen joined her. After she's done, her mother asks if she started a new trend of Rangers having multiple Partner Pokemon, horrifying Jane who doesn't want to be responsible for another change to the Ranger Union.
  • After Jolanka reveals she was only joking, she says that both Jenkins and herself are proud of Jane.
  • Meanwhile, at the Ranger Union HQ of Almia, Wendy's and Rosebay's Staraptor enter another fight, frustrating Wendy who manages to calm them down again.
