Roleplay Retcon is a semi-improvisational anthology Actual Play podcast that attempts to use storytelling games or Tabletop RPGs to improve movies that are infamous for either being a commercial flop, a critical dud, or being a disappointment for some other reason. The core cast (Benjamin Gray, Jensie Britt, and Alex Blasius), take turns running the campaigns, which vary in length. In between longer series are shorter "one-shot" remakes or stereotypical movie-discussion-podcast-style episodes. Most series or one-shots feature a different game, a guest player, and a musical guest (usually an indie band or composer) that provides most of the soundtrack.
The podcast began in late 2018 and new episodes are released every other Wednesday.
Thus far, the podcast has remade the following movies:
Main Series
The core of the podcast are series that last several episodes. The shortest of these is four episodes, and the longest ones clock in at 14. Each of these series begins with "Rookie Camp," an introductory episode with no roleplaying elements that introduces the movie, the guest player (if there is one), the musical guest (if there is one) and the game being played. Each series ends with "Rehash," a wrap-up episode where the cast compares their remake to the original movie.- Batman & Robin with guest Caleb Montgomery and played with GUMSHOE.
- Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, with guest Mona Moon and played with Savage Worlds.
- Twilight with guest Hailie Koch and played with Fate. This was the first series with a musical guest, The Wolves of Chernobyl.
- Nothing but Trouble played with Fiasco and music by The Lost Fingers. There was no guest player.
- Super Mario Bros. (1993) with guest Charles Cheez and played with W.O.I.N. Music by Challenger Deep.
- Dungeons & Dragons (2000) with guest Amy Kim and played with Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition. Music by Myuu.
- The Dark Tower with guest Rev Deschain and played with Cowboy World. Music by The Pine Hill Haints.
- Pixels with guest Kyle Taylor and played with Save Game (a variant of Fate). Music by Foot Pound Force.
- Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets with guest Jeanette Blasius and played with Starfinder. Music by Ben Prunty.
- Small Soldiers with guest Jess Geyer and played with their RPG Some Assembly Required.. Music by Jonathan Coulton.
- The Phantom of the Opera (2004) with guest Remick and played with Kids On Bikes. Music by Keygen Church.
Righters Room
In the early days, the podcast would separate series with single, standalone episodes where the core cast and invited guest(s) would discuss a flop movie and how it could be improved. There were no roleplaying elements.- The Santa Clause 3 with Franz Sweeney.
- Gentlemen Broncos with Jacque Castle.
- Envy with Big Meeting.
One Shots
The podcast replaced Righters Room with 1-2-episode remakes in between the larger series.- The Bodyguard with Alex Roberts and played with her game For The Queen. Covers of Whitney Houston songs by Amanda Cole.
- Meet Dave using Everyone Is John and music by Mateja Jezdic. No guest player.
- The Country Bears: An online live show played with Honey Heist with the audience acting as the GM. Music by Jonathan Coulton.
Experimental
- Arrested Development: The podcast re-imagined the fourth and fifth Netflix-produced seasons of the show using the game Soap. There were seven guests, most of whom had guested before.
- Every Lifetime Christmas Movie Ever: A parody of the extremely-formulaic Lifetime cable channel holiday movies. There was no game, guest, or musical guest; instead, the core cast improvised a story from scratch by following The Hero's Journey.
- And to All a Good Night: A general parody of traditional TV holiday specials about Santa and reindeer and such. Played with Alex Roberts' And to All a Good Night, a Santa-themed adaptation of her game For the Queen Music by Myuu.
