"But Make It Scary" is a podcast with a simple premise. Its host Sequoia Thomas and her guest rewrite various romantic comedies as horror movies. The podcast has been running since October 2020, beginning with reimagining the film Clueless. However, they do the occasional reversal, depending upon the holiday. Namely, they've done "Make it Lovely" versions of The Ring and The Fly (1986), and a “Make It Christmas” take on Halloween.

Tropes for specific episodes are listed below:

Episode Tropes:

General Tropes:

  • Adaptational Sexuality:
    • In Love Actually, Billy Mack and his manager Joe are depicted as lovers.
    • In their "But Make it Christmas" version of Halloween (1978), Laurie Strode and Annie are lesbians.
  • Animalistic Abomination:
    • In the Groundhog Day episode, the characters are menaced by a god-like being called The Grand Hog. A pair of gigantic groundhogs. But in Sequoia's episode, Punxsutawney Phil himself menaces Phil Connors.
    • In the "But Make it Lovely" version of The Fly (1986), the main characters get together to raise a human-fly hybrid creature. It's much more endearing than it sounds.
    • The Ultimate Villain of Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist turns out to be a pair of monstrously large bunny rabbits that want to sacrifice all of humankind.
  • Deal with the Devil:
    • In 27 Dresses, the main character makes a deal with the devil by selling 27 souls to him in exchange for those of her and her sister.
  • Hunter of Monsters:
  • Religion of Evil: Unsurprisingly, cults are a favorite topic of Sequoia and her guests.
    • In Sequoia's Shakespeare in Love: A cult led by Ned Alleyn sacrifices William Shakespeare and Viola to Ned. Her guests have a cult of witches that worship Psyche.
    • In both versions of Groundhog Day, the town is led by different cults.
  • Serial Killer:
