Basic Trope: A character is named after or referred to as a number.

  • Straight: A character's name is Four.
  • Exaggerated:
  • Downplayed: "Four" is stated to be a nickname; her real name is actually Alice.
  • Justified:
    • Four is a prisoner of some sort, and that's her prison number.
    • Four got the nickname after some incident involving the number 4.
    • Four's parents have a lot of children and couldn't think of individual names for them, so they just named them after numbers.
    • Four is a robot.
    • Four is an anthropomorphic number 4.
  • Inverted:
    • Someone is named after a letter.
    • Someone refers to numbers by names used for people.
  • Subverted: Someone thinks the character is named Four, but their name is being mispronounced. It's actually Thor.
  • Double Subverted: But Thor has a friend named Six.
  • Parodied:
  • Zig-Zagged: The character's name is "AL1C3".
  • Averted: No characters are named after numbers.
  • Enforced: The writers want to add some number-related symbolism to the narrative.
  • Lampshaded: "Who names their kid Four?"
  • Invoked: Alice calls herself "Four", thinking it has a unique sound to it.
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied: Four finds the numerical name dehumanizing and decides to go by Alice instead.
  • Discussed: "What's your name?" "Four." "Four? Like, the number?"
  • Conversed: "Why's that character named after a number?"
  • Played for Laughs: A character is named after a number with humorous connotations, such as Four Hundred and Twenty or Sixty Nine, which becomes a Running Gag.
  • Played for Drama:
    • Four gets mocked for her name.
    • Four is named after a number because she was never seen as worthy of deserving a real name, making her feel dehumanized.
  • Played for Horror: A dangerous character is named after numbers such as Six Hundred and Sixty Six, Thirteen, or Four.
