Basic Trope: A parent grounds a child.
- Straight: Bob's parents ground Bob for 2 months.
- Exaggerated: Bob's parents ground Bob for Eleventy Zillion years.
- Downplayed: Go to Your Room!
- Justified:
- Bob has been rebellious as of late.
- Bob was 3 minutes late for his curfew.
- Inverted:
- Bob grounds his parents for being neglectful and indifferent.
- Bob gets rewarded for his actions.
- Subverted: Bob's parents may have grounded him, but that doesn't mean he can't hold a Wild Teen Party at his family's house.
- Double Subverted: The party gets all the other kids grounded too.
- Parodied:
- Bob's parents ground Bob for dropping a crumb of chips on the living room floor.
- Bob is an adult who lives at his own house, yet anytime his parents tell him that he is grounded he complies.
- Bob's parents' idea of grounding Bob is to literally bury him. Bob has to then explain to his parents that grounding doesn't work that way.
- Zig Zagged: Bob gets grounded, but then does something nice and gets ungrounded, but then screws up and gets grounded again, then does something nice again, repeat ad nauseam.
- Averted: Bob's parents don't ground him at all.
- Enforced: "I'm thinking of a trial for Bob to go through. Why not have him get into trouble with his parents?"
- Lampshaded: "Why are you grounding me this time?"
- Invoked: Bob deliberately seeks to get grounded to get out of eating a disgusting dinner.
- Exploited: Alice starts causing trouble and blaming it all on Bob so he’ll get grounded instead. The parents believe her every time.
- Defied: Bob's parents want him out of their hair or Bob tries to be extra good.
- Discussed: "I'm grounded again." "What for this time?" "Spilling the milk."
- Conversed: "Oh, it's just another one of those episodes where Bob is grounded for breaking the rules."
- Deconstructed:
- Bob's parents ground him for the rest of the month, which made Bob truly hate his parents and decide to disown them and runaway from home forever.
- Depending on the punishment, Bob may either feel guilty or frustrated with the punishment while his parents wonder if they messed up with upbringing him.
- Reconstructed: After running away, Bob gets into trouble and also realizes that he loves and appreciates his family. He comes home and after a tearful reunion, submits to his parents' discipline because he knows they're looking out for him.
- Played For Laughs: Bob’s parents ground him for 50,000 years, not realizing that no-one in their family will live for that long.
- Played For Drama: Because of Bob coming home very late, his parents vehemently gave him a nasty speech about his lack of responsibility and ground him for 2 months. Deep down, however, they were mostly concerned for his well-being and they felt bad for showing their feelings this way.
