Basic Trope: Fictional hall monitors have way more power than in real life.

  • Straight: 5th grade student Cynthia is made the hall monitor of her school. She's allowed to stay around outside of class, interrogate students for their hall passes and halt them in place, and practically has teacher privileges.
  • Exaggerated: Cynthia doesn't even have to be in class at all, she can prevent the teachers from going into the halls, and she's basically the queen of the school.
  • Downplayed: Cynthia is allowed to be a few minutes late to class since it'll take her a bit of time to get there, but that's the extent of her special privileges.
  • Justified:
    • Cynthia's rich parents bought their way to give their child special treatment.
    • The school staff are Extreme Doormats.
  • Inverted: Being a hall monitor means Cynthia is given extra paperwork to keep track of, and she has to hang around in the school instead of going out for lunch and recess.
  • Subverted: Cynthia hangs around in the halls all day rather than attending classes because she thinks being a hall monitor means she can. Teachers notice her absences and tell her that she's not allowed to do that.
  • Double Subverted: But Cynthia brings up a good point that she should be there just in case anything weird happens in the halls. So the permission is granted.
  • Parodied: Even the teachers and principals are in fear of Cynthia, since she can prevent them from going into the halls.
  • Zig-Zagged: Cynthia's power depends on the day and the situation.
  • Averted: Cynthia's hall monitor powers are realistic and reasonable.
  • Enforced: The teachers had Small Reference Pools as to how hall monitors actually act.
  • Lampshaded: "I'm the hall monitor! You're required to tell me if I have a pass!"
  • Invoked: Cynthia applies for the job to get the special permissions.
  • Exploited: Cynthia abuses her privileges to prevent people from going out to recess, targeting classmates and not letting them go to class, and always getting first in the lunch line.
  • Defied: Cynthia's teachers severely limit and monitor her while she's patrolling the halls, so she doesn't get away with anything unusual.
  • Discussed: "I hear the hall monitor position has some pretty good perks."
  • Conversed: "Why do cartoon hall monitors get away with everything?"
