Basic Trope: A world where animals substitute for people.
- Straight: Alice is an alligator and Bob is a buffalo. They both speak English, live in houses, use money, wear clothes, and eat human foods. There is nothing unusual about that.
- Exaggerated:
- In this universe, every eukaryotic organism is intelligent, even cockroaches, worms and amoebas. It is a highly advanced civilization where it is not unusual to see a dog driving a car, a fly talking on his phone, a cow eating a hamburger, or even an amoeba somehow wearing clothing. Different species intermix freely, and their offspring may be of either species or a hybrid.
- Bob's best friends, Ibrahim and Altan, are a Pakicetus and a Velociraptor respectively, and there is nothing unusual about that.
- Downplayed: Alice and Bob live with humans.
- Justified: The work takes place in an alternate universe where humans never evolved, and all other species are sapient instead.
- Inverted: The work focuses on a purely human civilization, with no non-human animals to be seen anywhere.
- Subverted: A dog-person attends a party, but later it is revealed this is just a hyper-realistic costume.
- Double Subverted: Underneath the dog costume, he is actually a cat.
- Parodied: Even though the animals are clearly very civilized, they also still eat each other.
- Zig-Zagged: A dog-person attends a party, but later it is revealed this is just a hyper-realistic costume. However, underneath the dog costume, he is actually a cat. But it turns out the cat was a hyper-realistic costume. But then it's revealed that underneath the costume is a wolf, but it also turns out to be a costume, and so on.
- Averted: The world has humans as the dominant species, and animals are merely domestic.
- Enforced:
- The creator is an animal lover who wanted to make a world composed entirely of animals.
- The creator is a member of the Furry Fandom.
- The creator thinks Furries Are Easier to Draw.
- Lampshaded: "Alice is an alligator, and Bob is a buffalo. That's a bit weird."
- Invoked: A mad scientist genetically engineers animals to be sapient and humanoid, so he can study the evolution of a civilization with many species.
- Exploited: ???
- Defied: ???
- Discussed: ???
- Conversed: "So the alligator is in love with a buffalo?" "That's probably not unusual in this world. For one thing, the mayor of Troperville is a penguin who married a snake."
- Played for Laughs: Bob gives Alice meat as a gift, and she gives him a fish. Awkwardness follows.
- Played for Drama: The carnivore animals oppress the herbivore animals, keeping them from rebelling or questioning the status quo, Two young animals, Alice - an alligator of the carnivore clan - and Bob - a buffalo of the herbivore clan - must keep their friendship a secret.
