Basic Trope: A normally aggressive creature inexplicably doesn't attack the heroes.
- Straight: While sneaking into Emperor Evulz's base, Alice is spotted by his chief henchman Bob spots Alice...who just watches her without making any efforts to stop her.
- Exaggerated: Every member of Evulz's army stands back and lets Alice do what she wants.
- Downplayed: Bob does try to stop Alice, but the effort is abnormally token and half-hearted.
- Justified:
- Bob has had a change of heart, and has no intention of protecting Evulz anymore.
- Bob used to be Alice's friend, and he still values that enough to not hurt her if she doesn't get in her way.
- Bob has his own agenda and, at the moment, saving Evulz doesn't support it.
- Bob is simply ignorant of the fact that Alice is an intruder and Evulz's enemy.
- Bob is seriously injured and thus not able to attack Alice.
- … make that was, Bob's final convulsions only made it look like he was tracking her.
- Inverted: Bob is unusually aggressive, indicating that his attack is motivated by more then just duty.
- Subverted: Bob was just reaching for his weapon, and once he's properly armed he attacks.
- Double Subverted: But even then, he's just preparing to defend himself if needed- he doesn't initiate any hostilities.
- Parodied: Bob keeps enigmatically watching Alice without interfering...as Alice is beating the living shit out of him.
- Zig Zagged: Bob at first attacks Alice, but when she escapes and he catches her again he just lets her go. He finds her again at various points and his level of hostility keeps changing, making it very unclear where his loyalties lie
- Averted: Bob just attacks Alice like every other mook.
- Enforced: Bob is a fan favorite, so the writers want to foreshadow him possibly having a redemption arc later on.
- Lampshaded: "He could have killed me by now easily. What's he playing at?"
- Invoked: Alice warns the mooks of Evulz she's coming and that she won't attack anyone who doesn't attack her in the hopes that she can get them to stand back.
- Exploited: Evulz is aware of Bob's other agendas, and has posted him ahead of his base in the hope his inaction will lure Alice into a false sense of security.
- Defied: Another mook yells at Bob to stop fucking around and get Alice!
- Discussed: "These guys are never holding back because they're hungover. He's up to something."
- Conversed: "Ah, the classic 'enigmatic watching minion'. Either she's about to get her life saved or things are about to go really awfully."
