Basic Trope: A character rebels against an evil family.
- Straight: Alice von Tropington feels out of place among the rest of her wealthy, villainous family, making her likely to switch to the heroes' side.
- Exaggerated: Alice protests every single one of her family's villainous actions, even the extremely minor ones.
- Downplayed:
- Alice doesn't really act differently from the rest of her family but will occasionally show disapproval about their actions.
- Alice is an Affably Evil Jerk with a Heart of Gold in a family of irredeemable Jerkasses
- The von Tropingtons tend to be more distant and focused on their goals, lacking empathy and compassion unless they get a proper reminder that other people are human too. Alice is the only one of the family that regularly shows empathy.
- Justified: The rest of the von Tropingtons treated Alice like an outcast and her parents saw her as The Unfavorite, so she's more likely to leave them behind.
- Inverted: ???
- Subverted: Alice appears to be better than the rest of her family, but is later revealed to be just as bad as them.
- Double Subverted: She is still, however, the only one to pull a Heel–Face Turn and join the heroes.
- Parodied: Alice says she can't keep up with the horrible family tradition...of jaywalking.
- Zig Zagged: Alice goes through the Heel–Face Revolving Door.
- Averted: No one among a villainous family is particularly more moral.
- Enforced: The creators wanted a Token Enemy Minority/Token Heroic Orc.
- Lampshaded: "Oh, the rest of my family? Yeah, the other von Tropingtons are totally evil."
- Invoked: Alice's parents wanted a heroic child, so they deliberately raised her in a way that would make her rebel against them.
- Exploited: Knowing that Alice is more sympathetic to the heroes, her family bugs her communications to spy on them.
- Defied: Alice feels out of place, but decides that loyalty to the family is more important.
- Discussed: "Can we really trust Alice?" "Yeah, it's fine. Every villainous family's got that one secretly good member."
- Conversed: "Do you think the characters can trust Alice?" "Yeah, every villainous family always has one secretly good member."
- Played for Laughs: Alice yells "Goodness isn't a phase, mom!" before slamming the door to her room.
- Played for Drama: Alice's family casts her out because of her rebellious tendencies.
