Basic Trope: A type of magic (or equivalent force) that centres on beneficial effects.

  • Straight: Radiance, a school of magic, is capable of offering healing and protection at the very first spell level but has few or no generic damage spells.
  • Exaggerated: Radiance, Sanctity and Rejuvenation are three different schools of magic and the only form of spellcasting available to most people in the setting. Radiance hurts evil (and only evil) creatures, Sanctity blocks attacks and sets up wards and Rejuvenation heals and cures diseases. None of these schools has a universally effective attack or curse at all.
  • Downplayed: Radiance can wound and kill through generating intense light and invoking a divine presence, but this can only practically be done by the highest level of Radiance practitioners who have gotten used to using their spells to help people.
  • Justified:
    • Radiance is enabled by an omnibenevolent entity.
    • Radiance is triggered by feelings of empathy, compassion and love (of all varieties).
  • Inverted: Necrosis, a school of magic, contains a slew of spells that inflict damage, imbue victims with supernatural illnesses and drain life energy. However, there are few or no healing or protection spells.
  • Subverted: Radiance is used to strike down a random person.
  • Double Subverted: The person is revealed to be evil in retrospect.
  • Parodied: Radiance is a form of Ritual Magic which requires conditions such as the presence of rainbows and puppies, impeccable politeness and a tally of specific good deeds.
  • Zig Zagged: Radiance is used to strike down a random person. The person is revealed to be evil in retrospect; however, the spell is later found within a spellbook that indicates it is powered by anger rather than righteous cause. Ultimately, the information is found to be accurate in a sense but misleading - the trigger is righteous indignation specifically.
  • Averted:
    • Radiance possesses many different kinds of spells with no bias toward offence or defence.
    • There is no magic in the setting.
  • Enforced: ???
  • Lampshaded: "You going to fight or what?"
  • Invoked: A heroic archmage invents Radiance with the specific goal of ensuring it is most often used for good reasons.
  • Exploited: A Necrosis spell is developed that corrupts Radiance and reverses effect. Healing spells cause harm, smiting spells heal evil entities and wards increase the power of attacks and curses used on the target.
  • Defied: Radiance is given straightforward offensive spells so that practitioners can fight more morally ambiguous opponents.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
