Basic Trope: An elderly person is provoked into delivering a beating, usually with whatever they have on hand.

  • Straight: Dave provokes Grandpa Bob, who proceeds to beat him up with his cane.
  • Exaggerated: An Eldritch Abomination picks on Grandpa Bob, only to get beaten to a pulp with his hat.
  • Downplayed: Alice cracks a joke at Grandpa Bob's expense, and he angrily slaps her with his hat.
  • Justified:
  • Inverted:
  • Subverted:
    • Grandpa Bob looks like he's about to beat up Dave, but holds back at the last second.
    • Alice restrains Grandpa Bob before he can do anything to Dave.
  • Double Subverted:
    • Then he beats him up for real after Dave pushes his luck and provokes him again.
    • But he manages to break out of Alice's grip and proceeds to deliver the beating.
  • Parodied: Several old people get furious at each other, and the ensuing brawl is full of silly weapons, outdated insults and taunts and *Crack!* "Oh, My Back!"
  • Zig-Zagged: ???
  • Averted: No old people are provoked or engage in violence.
  • Enforced: The work needed a comedic sequence, and out of the readily available characters, Grandpa Bob was the easiest to work with.
  • Lampshaded: "See, this is why you should never insult your elders".
  • Invoked: Alice pranks Dave by telling him to call Grandpa Bob a logarithm, which he doesn't know the meaning of and mistakes for an insult, then proceeds to hit Dave with his cane.
  • Exploited: At a coffee shop, Dave pulls a hidden weapon on Alice and forces her to come along with him. She taunts Grandpa Bob into a violent frenzy in order to start a Diner Brawl and get a chance to escape.
  • Defied: Grandpa Bob goes to therapy to sort out his temper so he doesn't become a threat to anyone who happens to annoy him.
  • Discussed: "And whatever you do, do not make my grandpa angry, unless you happen to think running for your life is fun".
  • Conversed: ???
  • Implied: Dave threatens Grandpa Bob. The work then cuts to a different scene, and when it gets back to Dave, he's running away in fear while Grandpa Bob mutters about how his cane broke and he'll need to buy another one.
  • Deconstructed: Grandpa Bob is charged with assault.
  • Reconstructed: Dave was robbing him. Grandpa Bob's lawyer proves this in court and uses it to claim self-defense, and Grandpa Bob is exonerated.
  • Played for Laughs: ???
  • Played for Drama: Grandpa Bob causes serious injuries to Dave, and Alice has to deliver first aid while an ambulance arrives.
  • Played for Horror: The main characters in a horror story enter what is believed to be an abandoned mansion, only to find it's home to the ghost of an old man who gets angry at even the slightest noise. The main characters must get out of the mansion as quietly as possible or risk getting beaten to death by the angry ghost.
