Playing With / What Were They Selling Again?

Basic Trope: An ad pays almost no attention to what it's selling.

  • Straight: It's supposed to be an ad for juice, but it goes on like "Buy our juice. Y'know, juice, the stuff you drink, you can drink it in a house, you can drink it with a mouse. Oh, wait, that's Dr Seuss, no I'm not selling green eggs and ham, I'm selling juice, hey I rhymed. Isn't it weird when you accidentally rhyme...hmm what rhymes with orange? Hey, orange! Like our juice."
  • Exaggerated:
    • It just leaves you there on 'what rhymes with orange?', without even reminding us that they are selling juice, not rhymes.
    • It doesn't mention juice at all.
  • Downplayed: The commercial is effective enough, but leaves the viewer struggling to remember either the brand or the product.
  • Justified: The mascot is a character with a short attention span.
  • Inverted:
    • The ad just consists of a jingle which is just "Buy our juice, buy our juice", over and over again. Bonus points if the company name isn't even mentioned.
    • The sequence is very effective at getting people to remember the orange juice brand and why it's better than its competitors—but it's not a real commercial, just a part of a movie or TV show episode.
  • Subverted: At the 'you can drink it in a house' line, another character goes out and says "The viewers don't need to know where to drink the juice".
  • Double Subverted: But then said character gets distracted and says "Do they? Maybe they do. Basically, you can drink it..."cue the Long List, in the middle of which the character gets side-tracked.
  • Parodied: The commercial within a story plays out on TV, depicting a bottle of the leading competitor's orange juice going skateboarding and skydiving, with a quick mention of the intended brand at the end—and people head out en masse to buy the leading competitor's orange juice instead.
  • Zig Zagged: It's basically a Wiki Walk minus the internet with the conversation occasionally drifting back to juice.
  • Averted: The ad stays on topic and manages to be catchy at the same time.
  • Enforced:
    • The writer thinks being irrelevant makes money.
    • It's an ad for something like perfume or insurance, which are hard to portray the function of in an advertisement.
  • Lampshaded: "This is about juice, even though we're being really irrelevant".
  • Invoked: A character in the ad interrupts the speech on juice and starts talking about irrelevant things.
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied: "Okay, let me get this straight....we want you to buy our juice because we want to make money!!"
  • Discussed: "Wait...Aren't we supposed to be selling juice to these viewers? Because what's rhyming got to do with juice?"
  • Conversed: "That ad is so off-topic."
  • Played for Laughs: It's a kids' show character encouraging the kids via Fake Interactivity to "let me know if I'm going off topic".
  • Played for Drama: A Tear Jerker story which is also irrelevant to juice.
