Basic Trope: Real-life song lyrics are worked into the dialogue.

  • Straight: In an attempt to comfort his friend Jude, Jake says, "Hey Jude, don't make it bad. Take a sad song and make it better."
  • Exaggerated:
    • Jake speaks the entire song.
    • Characters in the story are regularly quoting song lyrics for any situation.
  • Downplayed:
    • Jake only says "Don't make it bad," or something similar to that.
    • Jake paraphrases the line, such as saying "Hey Jude, why don't you take that sad song and make it better?"
  • Justified: Jude is a Beatles fan and "Hey, Jude" is his favorite song, so hearing it does genuinely comfort him.
  • Inverted: Jake stops singing "Hey Jude" and segues into a normal conversation.
  • Subverted: "Hey, Jude. Don't...worry. It's going to be okay."
  • Double Subverted: "Hey, Jude. Don't...worry. It's going to be okay. Don't make it bad..."
  • Parodied:
  • Zig Zagged: ???
  • Averted: Jake doesn't speak any lyrics when comforting Jude.
  • Enforced:
  • Lampshaded:
Jake: Hey Jude, don't make it bad. Take a sad song and make it better.
    Jude: Isn't that a song?
  • Invoked: "Let me quote a song that got me through tough times. Hey, Jude. Don't make it bad..."
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied:
Jake: Let me quote a song that got me through tough times. Hey Ju—
    Jude: Oh, no, you don't!
  • Discussed: "You know how in TV shows they often insert gratuitous song lyrics in the dialogue as a reference? This is like one of those moments. Hey, Jude..."
  • Conversed:
Jake: Did they just quote a Beatles song in that scene?
Alice: Yeah, I think so. TV shows tend to do that.
  • Implied: Jude says, "I was feeling kinda down, so I'm glad Jake told me a few lines from my favorite song."
