Basic Trope: On a Reality Show or Game Show based around some type of contest or competition, contestants are eliminated by votes from either a panel of judges, the audience, or their fellow contestants.
- Straight: On Survival: Farside Island, the Red Team and the Blue Team each eliminate a member this way, until it becomes a head-to-head competition between Alice and Bob. The other contestants, meanwhile, are sent back home.
- Exaggerated: The eliminated contestants are actually killed off.
- Downplayed: It's some kind of preliminary challenge, where the votes determine rankings/advantages but don't send anyone home.
- Justified:
- Teams weed out members that they feel aren't pulling their weight, so that the strongest contestants can go on.
- The audience has a means to vote off The Scrappy.
- It's a contest of some skill (like, say, cake baking), and it's up to qualified judges to decide if contestants have met or exceeded expectations.
- Inverted:
- The Red Team and the Blue Team on Survival: Farside Island each vote to get rid of one of the judges.
- They vote which team member to keep.
- Subverted: Carol is leaving the island not because someone voted to get rid of her, but because she had a family emergency back home.
- Double Subverted: Then it's revealed that her rival, Alice, had recommended that she leave anyway, because no one liked her.
- Parodied: Contestants so voted off are shot out of a cannon.
- Zig Zagged: Sometimes, eliminations are decided by contestants or judges, sometimes by a race or a game.
- Averted:
- This isn't a contest-based show.
- Or it is, but the winners and losers are not picked by vote.
- Enforced: This is the best/most interesting format for the show to eliminate contestants, because they're being tested on their social skills and/or aren't always doing things that can be judged objectively.
- Lampshaded: "Each team will have the chance to eliminate one member, until there are only two left, one on each team."
- Invoked: I'm Not Here to Make Friends
- Exploited: Team members use it as a chance to weed out competition, or to get rid of members they feel are bringing them down.
- Defied:
- The members can't decide on who to vote off.
- The members outright refuse to vote for whatever reason.
- Discussed: ???
- Conversed: ???
