Playing With / Unexpected Inheritance

Go To

Basic Trope: A character receives inheritance from a distant relative whom they don't know personally.

  • Straight: Danny inherits a large mansion from the recently deceased Duke Allerton, his Disappeared Dad's second cousin, whom he's never met (or even heard of).
  • Exaggerated: Danny inherits an entire kingdom on the opposite side of the globe, as the recently deceased (and heirless) King is apparently his fifth-cousin twice removed.
  • Downplayed: Danny inherits some cash from his granduncle, even though he's only met the man once or twice during family gatherings, and didn't expect to receive anything from him.
  • Justified:
    • Duke Allerton is very family-oriented, and wants every one of his known relatives to receive a share of his wealth, even if he's never met them personally.
    • Danny is at four generations worth of separation Duke Allerton's only eligible-for-inheritance relative as he left no (enforceable) will stating otherwise.
  • Inverted: Danny is expecting a huge inheritance from his recently deceased father, only to discover that his father left all of his possessions to his more distant relatives instead.
  • Subverted: The news of Duke Allerton's inheritance turns out to be a prank.
  • Double Subverted: The pranksters were onto some Accidental Truth. Danny does indeed inherit from Duke Allerton.
  • Parodied: Duke Allerton wrote on a scrap of paper on his deathbed that he's leaving his mansion to a certain "Danny". None of his attorneys knew who this Danny is, as none of Duke's close relatives or friends bear that name. They end up giving the mansion to the first Danny they can find.
  • Zig Zagged: Danny receives news that the recently deceased Duke Allerton has named him a beneficiary of his will, but this turns out to be a prank. Only it was revealed that Duke Allerton's will does name Danny to inherit his mansion. Later investigations show that the Danny named in the will is actually referring to someone with the same name. But the other Danny doesn't want the inheritance and allows Danny to claim the mansion.
  • Averted: Danny only receives inheritance from his parents and close relatives, as he should be expected.
  • Invoked: Duke Allerton doesn't want to leave his money to his children, but doesn't want his fortune to go to strangers. Then he remembers that nice boy his distant cousin introduced to him during a family gathering...
  • Enforced: The writers need a way to show that Ordinary High-School Student Danny actually comes from a more "special" lineage, plus showing all its benefits and disadvantages, without having to create a new character.
  • Lampshaded: "I don't know who this Duke Allerton is, but I'm really grateful to him for leaving me his mansion."
  • Exploited: Danny starts researching Duke Allerton's family tree to see if he has any more long-lost relatives he can claim inheritance from.
  • Defied: Danny refused claim the inheritance, fearing that whatever he received might bring him bad luck instead.
  • Discussed: "Gee, Danny, I didn't know you come from the prestigious Allerton family." "Neither did I, but it's nice knowing that I won't have to worry about money for at least the next ten years."
  • Conversed: ???
  • Deconstructed: Danny's sudden increase in wealth result in a much higher taxes, which his income can't afford. Danny tries to sell off the mansion, but has difficulties getting a buyer. He ends up financially worse off than before.
  • Reconstructed: Danny rents out the mansion to get enough passive income to pay the additional taxes (plus some extra spending money), and eventually earns enough to quit his job and start his own company.

No, I am not related to the wiki's admins, and I don't know why they're letting me inherit the Main Page.
