Playing With / Unaccustomed as I Am to Public Speaking...

Go To

Basic Trope: Someone claims to not have good speaking skills, when they are actually very skilled.

  • Straight: Eddie is about to make a speech, and keeps telling people that he's not a good orator. However, when he makes the speech, he's actually excellent at it.
  • Exaggerated: Eddie thinks he's the worst public speaker on the planet, despite being a professional orator who has given many speeches over the course of his life.
  • Downplayed: Eddie thinks he may not be a very good speaker. His speech goes well regardless, though.
  • Justified:
    • Eddie is insecure about his abilities.
    • Eddie is being humble.
    • Eddie has never given a speech in public before, and thinks he won't do very well because of it.
    • Eddie is dealing with Performance Anxiety.
  • Inverted: Eddie thinks he's a good orator, but he absolutely sucks at giving speeches.
  • Subverted: ???
  • Double Subverted: ???
  • Parodied: ???
  • Zig-Zagged: ???
  • Averted: Eddie is a decent orator and believes himself to be as well.
  • Enforced: It's the only way Eduardo's speech from the Spanish original can be translated without changing his humbleness and have it fit the grammar pattern chosen for Eddie.
  • Lampshaded: ???
  • Invoked: Eddie intentionally claims he isn't a good orator so that his audience's expectations won't be too high.
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied: ???
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: "Why is that character claiming he can't give speeches? I think his speech turned out really well!"

I may not be very good at potholing, but can I show you back to the main page?
