Basic Trope: A character cannot leave their house at will.

  • Straight: Bob is a quadriplegic, and can't leave his house without assistance.
  • Exaggerated: Bob won't even go into the rooms of his house that have a door to the outside.
  • Downplayed: Bob had surgery on his leg and cannot put any weight on it for a few weeks. His friends and family come to see him at home and take pains to make sure that he's included in their activities as much as possible.
  • Justified:
    • Bob is recovering from serious injuries and is in pain most of the time. He's taking pain medication that makes him sleepy, and is most comfortable in bed.
    • Bob has an inflammatory bowel disease such as Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis. He tries to be near a bathroom in case of emergency.
  • Inverted:
    • Bob spends very little time at home. He works long hours, eats out at restaurants instead of cooking, and does all his leisure activities outside of his house. His home is pretty much just where he sleeps and showers.
    • Bob is homeless.
  • Subverted: No one ever sees Bob leave his house, and they assume that he's a Shut-In. It turns out he works nights as a security guard at a nuclear power plant, so no one ever sees him when he's at work, and he sleeps during the day.
  • Double Subverted: Bob lies about this to seem less pathetic.
  • Parodied: Bob is discovered wearing a decaying wedding dress in a cobweb laced room after a break-up, in an episode where he cuts himself off from the world.
  • Zig-Zagged: ???
  • Averted: Bob is perfectly capable of leaving his house.
  • Enforced:
    • Most of this week's episode's budget was used for last week's… so they could only afford the usage of the Bob's home sets for a Bottle Episode.
    • To drive home how debilitating real post surgical recovery is.
  • Lampshaded:
  • Invoked:
  • Exploited: Bob spends his long, lonely hours at home observing his neighborhood to various ends.
  • Defied: It's very difficult, but Bob makes a commitment to leaving the house every day.
  • Discussed:
  • Conversed:
  • Implied: Four seasons go by where Bob is never seen outside the house, always rapidly shoos visitors in, has mail piled up around the base of his mailbox, and has knee-level lawn.
  • Deconstructed: Bob has stayed in his house for too long that he becomes flat-out lazy and unmotivated to do anything and everything.
  • Reconstructed: Bob simply prefers to stay at home at all costs, and could care less about going outside even for one millisecond.
  • Played for Laughs: Bob has vampire-like qualities and rapidly sunburns.
  • Played for Drama: Tells of Bob's isolation, such as dusty, web ridden furniture, dated durable goods, and piled up trash are displayed during the longer monologues.
  • Untwisted:
