Basic Trope: An object of value given to someone about to go into battle.
- Straight: Bob, a knight, is about to go out and fight Emperor Evulz. Alice, the princess of the kingdom he serves, gives her a ring of hers right before he takes off.
- Exaggerated: Alice gives Bob as many of her things as he can possibly carry before he goes out to battle.
- Downplayed: Alice gives Bob something and tells him that while she doesn't need it back, it would be nice if he could return it once he gets back.
- Justified: The ring Alice gives Bob is a royal heirloom, and if it isn't returned, Alice will be in trouble.
- Alice believes that the ring will stop Bob from being Distracted by the Sexy on his quest.
- Inverted:
- Alice takes something valuable from Bob, promising that he can have it back when he gets back from the battle.
- Gender-flipped. Bob and Alice are both Warriors, and Bob carries two rings around his neck. He gives one of them to Alice before they go off to battle.
- Subverted: Alice gives Bob something before he heads out to battle, but does not expect it back, telling Bob he can keep it.
- Double Subverted: Bob comes back and returns it anyways.
- Parodied: Alice gives Bob an item that actually hinders him in his fight against Emperor Evulz.
- Averted: Alice doesn't give Bob anything.
- Enforced: ???
- Lampshaded: "Try not to lose that or die. I'd very much like it back."
- Invoked: Alice's sister Candace gives Alex, Bob's Friendly Rival, something, so not wanting to have her sister show her up, Alice gives Bob something more valuable.
- Exploited: Alice knows that Evulz's forces will not attack a warrior who is carrying a certain item she just so happens to have, even if said warrior is attacking them, and she wants Bob to come back alive.
- Defied: "Don't give me anything to take with me. If I fall, I'll end up feeling disappointed I can't return it."
- Discussed: ???
- Conversed: ???
