Basic Trope: A character who is a highly trusted advisor to another.
- Straight: Whenever Don Donatello is in trouble, he turns to his most trusted associate, Tony Segundo, for assistance.
- Exaggerated: Tony is so effective he's the leader of the entire Mafia operation for all intents and purposes.
- Downplayed: While not his boss's go-to guy, Tony is still well-respected within the outfit.
- Justified: Tony is forthright, honest, and rightly critical of his boss's actions when necessary.
- Inverted: Unbeknownst to the Don, Tony is a backstabber plotting to overthrow his boss the first chance he gets.
- Subverted: Tony is relied upon by the Don for advice, but Tony is massively incompetent.
- Double Subverted: Tony's suggestions look bizarre at first glance, but they turn out to be either unusual solutions that are Crazy Enough to Work or are couched as jokes to make it easier for the egotistical Don to stomach, with Tony being the Mob equivalent of the Court Jester.
- Parodied: Don Donatello doesn't decide what to eat for breakfast without first consulting Tony.
- Zig Zagged: Tony's advice is ignored as often as it is accepted by the Don.
- Averted: Rather than having the Don's ear, Tony is just a fingerman for the outfit.
- Enforced: Knowing that every successful mob needs a good brain-man, Don Donatello takes Tony under his wing to mold him into the proper underling—whether he wants to be one or not.
- Lampshaded: Everyone treats Tony with the same respect as the Don because, for all intents and purposes, he is.
- Invoked: The upwardly mobile Tony attempts to set himself up as a trusted advisor to the Don.
- Exploited: Tony wants to be the Don without being the Don, and being the Don's right hand is the best way to accomplish that.
- Defied: Despite his status, nobody listens to Tony, or likes him very much either.
- Discussed: Everybody knows Tony is near the top of the heap, and a lot of people under him envy him for it.
- Conversed: Tony comes equipped with a "I do what he says, you do what I say" speech for wise guys who don't like their jobs.
- Implied: Tony has special status within the outfit, including being married to one of the Don's daughters.
- Deconstructed:
- Tony's status as the Don's right-hand man makes him a keystone of the organization, as well as a high-profile target for assassinations and other unsavory acts. The job tends to take a toll on one's mental health.
- Just because Don Donatello asks Tony for advice doesn't mean Tony's always the best man for the job. When things go south for the outfit after a botched job on another gang's bank, instead of chalking it up to a simple mistake, the Don assumes Tony is intentionally misleading him and tries to have him fitted for a new pair of concrete loafers.
- Reconstructed:
- Tony is a resilient fellow and can hold his own in a fight. Compared to wrangling the Don, the physical side of his job is easy.
- Tony himself is aware that he's not omniscient and makes sure that the Don knows that as well, so that while Donatello can still trust that Tony isn't being duplicitous he also knows to branch out and find other trustworthy sources to plan with and corroborate the information he's getting. Worst case scenario, if Tony were to die for reasons outside Donatello's control (e.g., he gets off'd by a rival gang or has a heart attack) at least Donatello already has some idea of whom to make his next Consiglere. That Tony is willing to let others have the ear of Donatello, at least once in a while, helps assuage fears of his loyalty.
