Playing With / Thanking the Viewer

Go To

Basic Trope: The work thanks the audience, often for viewing the work.

  • Straight: "The Adventures of Bob" has the titular character say "Thanks for watching my show!" as a Signing Off Catchphrase.
  • Exaggerated:
    • Bob is constantly thanking the viewers for watching his show.
    • Bob has an entire speech dedicated to praising the viewers.
  • Downplayed: Bob briefly says "Thanks!" while waving goodbye to the audience.
  • Justified: The show has No Fourth Wall and Bob is grateful that someone enjoys the show he's in.
  • Inverted: Bob criticizes the audience for watching his show.
  • Subverted:
    • After presumably thanking the audience, Bob's FBI agent is watching him in his office, where he responds, "You're welcome."
    • We hear someone shouting "cut!", indicating that they were filming this in a show within a show.
  • Double Subverted:
    • The FBI agent then thanks you for joining him.
    • Bob, now out of character, thanks the audience who watched them making it anyways.
  • Parodied: ???
  • Zig-Zagged:
    • That FBI agent has someone else watching him, who thanks the viewer. The chain continues on.
    • It was a show within a show within a show. And the FBI agent is watching it.
  • Averted: None of the characters thank the audience.
  • Enforced:
    • "We need to show how much we love our fans, let's have the characters tell them."
    • "We have to have the cast thank the audience to encourage them to be Viewers Like You.
  • Lampshaded: ???
  • Invoked: ???
  • Exploited: Emperor Evulz seizes the moment where Bob is thanking the audience to put his plan into effect. After all, Bob's distracted, so who's gonna stop him?
  • Defied: ???
  • Discussed: "So why again are we thanking them for such a menial task? For all we know, it might not have even been their choice to watch this."
  • Conversed: "I always loved it when characters thanked me for watching the show when I was younger."
  • Played for Laughs: Bob goes so over the top when thanking the audience that he ends up out of breath.
  • Played for Drama: Afterwards, he lets loose about his struggles, and we see that Bob's character is far different than who he actually is.
  • Played for Horror: This is Bob's cue, now that he's become Emperor Evulz, to turn the camera off so that he can begin committing his evil acts once again.
