Basic Trope: Fictional exotic food is said to taste like chicken.

  • Straight: The year is 2344 C.E., and two very brave explorers named Alice and Bob have discovered a planet similar to Earth. The locals are eating some strange alien food and one of them offers them some. They take a cautious bite and say "Mmm. Tastes like chicken."
  • Exaggerated: They then eat a whole three-course alien meal. All of it tastes like chicken to them, even the dessert.
  • Downplayed: Alice and Bob think it tastes very slightly similar to chicken.
  • Justified:
    • The food was from a birdlike creature with similar DNA to a chicken.
    • Like chicken, its meat gets most of its taste from what it eats, which in this case just so happens to be close to chickenfeed.
    • Hundreds of thousands of years ago, those same aliens' ancestors had visited Earth and abducted the ancestors of chickens to breed and eat them. By the time Alice and Bob find their descendants on the alien planet, they're so far removed from Earth's enviorment that they look unrecgonizable, but still kept that old taste.
  • Inverted: An alien comes to Earth, tastes some chicken, and says "It tastes like something from my planet."
  • Subverted:
    • "It tastes like chickpeas!"
    • "It tastes like chicken! ...No it doesn't, I just said that because that's what you're supposed to say when eating something weird."
  • Double Subverted:
    • "It tastes like chickpea and chicken soup!"
    • "...Wait, it does taste like chicken!"
  • Parodied:
    • The different kinds of food taste similar to chicken, but prepared in different ways (Fried, grilled, baked, etc).
    • This exchange:
      Alice: It tastes like chicken!
Bob: Yeah, and so does this. And this.
      Alien: What's a chicken, human?
Alice: A bird on Earth. There's a dance named after it, some people eat them, some don't, some only eat their eggs, and it's what lots of the foods we've eaten on other planets taste like.
      Alien: Fascinating.
  • Averted: None of the alien lunches taste like chicken to Alice or Bob.
  • Zigzagged:
    • On that planet, Alice and Bob try several different foods. Some taste like chicken, some don't.
    • Bob's trying to figure out what the food tastes like. Sometimes he thinks it tastes like chicken, sometimes not.
  • Enforced: Rule of Funny
  • Lampshaded: "How come everything on other planets tastes like chicken?"
  • Invoked: The aliens develop interplanetary travel, study Earth chickens and try to get their foods to taste like chicken for some reason.
  • Exploited: A few of these aliens move to Earth, having been told their food tastes like chicken, and make a profit out of selling it as chicken.
  • Defied: Alice and Bob refuse to eat any of the aliens' food.
  • Discussed: "I've heard from Bob that the food on this planet tastes like chicken. I wonder how it could taste like chicken? Did it evolve from a chickenlike bird? etc, etc"
  • Conversed: "How come everyone in Fiction Land thinks the food tastes like chicken?"
  • Implied: alice and Bob look at a chicken while finding their food tasty.
  • Deconstructed:
    • Since people think everything tastes like chicken, they slaughter all the chickens for a feast and drive the chicken extinct.
    • The taste of chicken becomes the default taste of meat in general, and it would be boring if all meats tasted the same.
  • Reconstructed:
    • They mass breed the perfect chicken breed for maximum juice and taste before they could drive chickens extinct.
    • That all meat tastes the same encourages a diverse meal of both meats and greens.
  • Played for Laughs: Alice describes chicken to an alien as tasting like "your food".
  • Played for Drama: Aliens steal all of Earth's chickens because their chicken-flavored food is loved by their allies.
  • Played for Horror: Fridge Horror: If everything tastes like chicken, and you love chicken, then nothing stops the risk of being an Extreme Omnivore, to the point where you eat something flat-out harmful for you.
