Go To

Basic Trope: Someone who wears suspenders gets them caught on an object or in another person's grasp.

  • Straight:
    • Bob gets his suspenders caught on a hook when he tries to walk off and gets pulled back.
    • Alice grabs Bob by his suspenders when he tries to walk away from her and gets pulled back.
  • Exaggerated: Anyone who wears suspenders is susceptible to have them get snagged at any feasible time.
  • Downplayed: A pair of suspenders only gets snagged at least once a season, or even once every two seasons.
  • Justified: Alice and Bob are entertainers and this is one of the gags on their show.
  • Inverted: Alice grabs Bob by his pants and he slips out of them when he tries to walk away, but his suspenders still stay on his shoulders and he gets pulled back.
  • Subverted:
    • Alice accidentally pulls Bob's suspenders off by grabbing them.
    • Alice decides to let go of Bob's suspenders before he gets pulled back.
  • Double Subverted: Bob's suspenders get caught on a hook as they snap back.
  • Parodied: Bob wears suspenders that can stretch infinitely and gets them caught on a hook in his house. When he decides he wants to go home, he gets pulled back all the way to his house.
  • Zig-Zagged: ???
  • Averted:
    • Bob doesn't wear suspenders.
    • Alice respects Bob's boundaries and doesn't touch his suspenders.
  • Enforced: The writers need a way for Alice to catch Bob, so they make him wear suspenders for her to grab onto.
  • Lampshaded: "I can't believe Alice pulled me by my suspenders!"
  • Invoked:
    • Alice makes Bob wear suspenders to make him easier to catch when he tries to walk away from her.
    • Bob tells Alice to hold onto his suspenders to keep himself restrained.
  • Exploited: Bob hooks his suspenders on a winch to use them as an improvised harness.
  • Defied: Bob knows his suspenders always get caught on everything, so he wears a belt instead.
  • Discussed: "I try to avoid wearing suspenders because I don't want everyone and everything to get their hands on them."
  • Conversed: ???
  • Implied: The audience doesn't see Bob's suspenders getting caught, but when he reaches a doorway, he gets pulled back.
  • Played for Drama: After Bob tells Alice he's breaking up with her, Alice grabs Bob by his suspenders when he tries to walk away while begging him not to go, but she loses her grip and Bob leaves.
  • Played for Horror: Alice is a Serial Killer, and after Bob gets his suspenders caught trying to escape her, he's killed.
