Basic Trope: A character placed in a stressful situation vomits.
- Straight: Alice has just broken off her wedding with Bob and in his anger and sorrow, he vomits on the spot.
- Exaggerated: Alice breaks off the wedding, so Bob begins to projectile vomit for the next five minutes.
- Downplayed: When Alice breaks off the wedding, Bob mentions he suddenly feels ill and barely keeps himself from vomiting.
- Justified:
- Truth in Television — emotional stress can induce vomiting.
- Bob was already feeling rather nauseous to begin with, and Alice breaking off the wedding was the last straw for him.
- Inverted:
- Bob suddenly feels healthier when Alice breaks off the wedding and decides to go for a jog.
- Alice agrees to marry Bob, who reacts by puking.
- Subverted: Bob feels sick to his stomach but does not throw up.
- Double Subverted: Later, as Bob fully comes to the reality of the situation, he vomits.
- Parodied: Alice tells Bob she wants to change the wedding date by one day and Bob promptly vomits all over her in a fit of desperation.
- Zig Zagged: Bob finds out Alice has called off the wedding and breaks down sobbing, but does not vomit. He does, however, go to drown his sorrows at a bar and ends up drinking so much he has a hangover. Then Alice tells him she's sorry, and was scared, and wants to continue the wedding. Bob pukes from joy.
- Averted: Bob doesn't puke.
- Enforced: The writers want to show the full emotional toll of Bob's situation by throwing up.
- Lampshaded: "I didn't know people vomit when they get stressed."
- Invoked: Bob expects to get some bad news, so he goes to the sink under the belief that the news will stress him out enough to vomit.
- Exploited: Bob induces vomitting so he can elicit some sympathy from Alice.
- Defied: Bob feels a little sick but chokes everything down, refusing to vomit in front of everyone.
- Discussed: "Bob felt so bad about what Alice did that he threw up!"
- Conversed: "I hate it when characters throw up in movies because they're stressed. Who does that?"
- Implied: "Bob was really distraught. Poor guy couldn't even keep his lunch."
- Deconstructed: Bob throws up when Alice leaves him but it is soon realized that he is actually sick...
- Reconstructed: ... The sickness was caused by stress.
- Played For Laughs: Bob cries while watching a sad movie, then throws up everywhere and causes a Vomit Chain Reaction in the theater.
- Played For Drama: Bob becomes violently ill over his heartache and nearly dies.
Playing with all these tropes is just... too much to handle... BLLAAARGG!
