Basic Trope: A character's friends and family formally confront them about an unhealthy habit.

  • Straight: Bob's friends and family gather to confront him about his drinking problem.
  • Exaggerated:
    • The entire town gathers to confront Bob about his drinking problem.
    • Bob's drinking problem isn't really that bad.
  • Downplayed: A couple of Bob's friends tell him he's drinking too much and needs to slow down.
  • Justified: Bob has a legitimate drinking problem, and his friends and family worry he might do something stupid if it isn't addressed.
  • Inverted: Bob's friends and family confront him about him eating too many healthy foods.
  • Subverted:
    • Bob's friends and family gather, and say "We need to talk", as if ready to confront him about a problem, but they were just messing with him, and all start joking around about something fun and lighthearted.
    • Bob's friends start an intervention, then Bob tells then that he's already stopped drinking.
  • Double Subverted: Then, after that initial joking around, they begin the intervention.
  • Parodied: Bob's friends and family gather to confront him about his drinking problem, when he doesn't usually drink, and only had a single sip of beer at one party.
  • Zig-Zagged: Bob's friends try to stage an intervention, but Bob tells them that he actually doesn't drink. As it turns out, everyone else who was part of the intervention is completely drunk, and Bob ends up staging an intervention for them.
  • Averted:
    • Nobody thinks Bob has a drinking problem.
    • Bob's friends and family don't confront him about his drinking problem.
  • Enforced: The producers don't want it to look like they're supporting alcoholism, so the writers have to make it clear that Bob's excessive drinking is a legitimate problem.
  • Lampshaded: "Is this an intervention?"
  • Invoked: Bob's friends and family meet to discuss Bob's behavior, and plan the intervention.
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied: Bob sees his friends and family gathered. The moment they say, "We need to talk", he knows what's coming, gets up, and walks away before they can get another word in.
  • Discussed: "The way you're all gathered there - let me guess, 'We need to talk'?"
  • Conversed: ???
  • Implied: Bob refuses to order a drink at a bar. When asked why, he mentions some friends told him he drinks too much, and needs to cut back.
