Go To

Basic Trope: When a villain's name is spoken, the villain appears.

  • Straight: When Bob accidentally says Emperor Evulz's name, Evulz appears.
  • Exaggerated:
    • Bob doesn't even finish saying Evulz's name and he still appears.
    • Bob just thinks of Evulz's name and he appears.
  • Downplayed:
  • Justified: Evulz so powerful he can go by his True Name. None are mighty enough to bind him with it, and as the name is as much a part of him as his hands, to say his name is inherently to invoke him.
  • Inverted:
    • Whenever Bob says Evulz's name, the villain disappears, banished by his True Name.
    • Bob says the name of Alice, a good deity. She appears.
    • Speak of Evulz's name, and you will be teleported to his presence.
  • Subverted: Bob says Evulz's name. Nothing happens.
  • Double Subverted: Evulz does appear, he just takes his time doing it.
  • Parodied:
    • When Bob says Evulz's name, he appears dressed in whatever he was wearing. He also carries whatever he was carrying before. This results in Evulz frequently being pulled out in the middle of eating lunch or brushing his teeth.
    • Bob and Evulz get into an argument over whether things like using a pre-recorded voice, spelling each letter out in order, using sign language, miming, using a pre-recorded voice backwards, etc., count as saying Evulz's name.
  • Zig Zagged: Sometimes Evulz appears after his name is mentioned, sometimes he doesn't appear.
  • Averted: Evulz's doesn't appear after his name is spoken.
  • Enforced: ???
  • Lampshaded: Evulz: "Did someone call my name?"
  • Invoked:
    • Evulz waits until he hears his name, then appears to make himself seem more intimidating.
    • Bob knows part of Evulz's routine and demonstrates this by saying his name at the third turn of his morning jog just as he's about to take it.
    • Evulz had a say my name field cast around him slightly larger than his perceptibility range, causing people to say his name just before he enters their line of sight
  • Exploited:
    • Alice, who secretly hates Bob, tricks him into say Evulz's name.
    • Bob prepares an ambush, then says Evulz's name to draw him into it.
    • Evulz has servant pre-prepared to say his name so that he may travel between realms at great speed.
  • Defied: Bob gets around summoning Evulz by saying euphemisms that replace Evulz's name.
  • Discussed:
    • "Everytime Evulz's name is mentioned on this show, he appears? Why does that happen?"
    • Evulz is meeting his henchmen, when he suddenly disappears from the shot. The henchmen shrug and say "Someone must have said his name again."
  • Conversed: ???
  • Implied: While it's never discussed, Evulz always seems to appear with a minute of another group of characters talking about him- and as it's never discussed, it's up in the air if this is coincidence or not.
  • Deconstructed:
    • Evulz uses his ability to appear whenever he is mentioned as a form of Sinister Surveillance, making it nearly impossible to discuss how to defeat him.
    • Evulz's name is replaced by an euphemism to avoid his wrath. This is successfully to the point that everyone's forgotten his actual name, and so he can no-longer be summoned.
  • Reconstructed: Evulz still knows his own name, and makes sure to write it in runes upon ancient ruins and whisper it into the dreams of sleepers, in the hopes that the knowledge of his name will spread to the ignorant and they summon him by accident.
  • Played For Laughs: Bob annoys Evulz by constantly summoning him with his name.

Back to Speak of the Devil... But do NOT mention... him.. or he will appear.
