Basic Trope: A type of Space Colony in science fiction in which people live a simple, rural life that is ruled by a strict religious system.

  • Straight: Ammann is a planet on which people live in farming communities, all follow the same, protestantism-like religion and barely use modern technology.

  • Exaggerated: A whole galaxy of colonized planets works like this.

  • Downplayed: People on Ammann live in farming communities and barely use any modern technology, but there a multiple belief systems and some technologies are well-tolerated.

  • Justified: Ammann was founded as a Cult Colony.

  • Inverted: Dawkins is a planet that requires you to be atheist and is populated by scientists who no just use technology to a really high extent, but also create the next generation of modern technology. In private, people there are living in a Free-Love Future.

  • Subverted: When arriving in Ammann, everyone is amazed at Bob's modern spaceship and he only sees farms with rather minor equipment and people in very much old-fashioned clothing. But he landed in a poorer part of a more diverse planet.

  • Double Subverted: The parts of Ammann that live different to the places he saw first are only some rebellious provinces, and are tolerated by the Ammannite government with the hope of seeing their ways fail in spectacular ways.

  • Enforced: The author views the idea of people living without modern technology in a highly technological setting as very interesting.

  • Zigzagged: Some places on Ammann live with modern technology, others don't.

  • Parodied: The people of Ammann immediately worship those arriving on a space ship as angels.

  • Averted: Modern technology is used everywhere in the colonized universe.

  • Deconstructed: Due to the lack of modern technology, Ammann becomes a Lost Colony and dies out when confronted with The Plague.
