Playing With / Snow Means Love

Go To

Basic Trope: People in love in a snowy background.

  • Straight: Two characters, that are either implicitly or explicitly in love, have a tender moment in a snowy scene.
  • Exaggerated:
    • Alice and Bob show no love unless in the snow.
    • Alice and Bob strip down and have sex outside in the middle of a blizzard.
  • Downplayed: It's early spring and there's a small amount of snow left unthawed. The tender moment is held in or near one of these pockets of snow.
  • Justified:
    • They met during a snowfall.
    • It's Christmas, there's mistletoe... you know the rest.
  • Inverted:
  • Subverted:
    • Alice and Bob who date have an argument in the snow.
    • Alice and Bob become upset with each other when it starts snowing.
    • Alice and Bob enjoy a stroll in the snow, but there is an incident which results in a Moment Killer.
  • Double Subverted:
    • Alice and Bob become upset with each other when it starts snowing. After becoming upset with each other the characters somehow manage to reconcile in a snowy field.
    • Lovers Alice and Bob have an argument in the snow. They resolve things with a friendly snowball fight.
  • Parodied: The characters realize that they are in love, and then it starts snowing... Even if it's summer.
  • Zig Zagged: It's snowing and Christmas is fast approaching. Bob calls his friend Amy on the phone and asks her to go for a stroll in the snow-covered park. He implies it's a date. Amy hates the snow and cold weather and doesn't really want to go. Bob sounds too disappointed, so Amy finally says ok. She dresses in her nicest winter clothes and meets Bob in the park. Bob offers to share his umbrella with her, but Amy finds using umbrellas for snowy weather laughable. Bob feels insulted. Amy says it's too cold to be outside and it starts snowing really heavily. She suggests they get a cup of coffee together. Bob is chuffed and wants to put his arm through hers, but she really doesn't want to be too close to him. Bob decides that Amy is too bitchy and suddenly can't remember what he saw in her. Now Bob believes that only a fool would consider snow romantic. If anything, it's annoying.
  • Averted:
    • Two characters share several heart-to-heart scenes in the snow, however it is clear that they are not in romantically in love and/or have their respective relationships.
    • No important incidents happen in the snow.
    • The setting is a tropical area where there is no snow.
    • Or everything happens in the snow, so while the characters in love might be in it, it doesn't carry any extra significance, as it's just an inevitable fact of their geographical location.
  • Enforced: The writer fell in love and got together with his love in the snow, so he makes the Official Couple realize their feelings in the same place.
  • Lampshaded: "And because this is the perfect ambience for this, I have something to tell you..."
  • Invoked:
    • One character arranges a date with the other that includes a walk in the snow because he/she thinks it will be romantic.
    • A character plans to propose when it is snowing because his girlfriend loves snow.
  • Exploited: A matchmaker and weather controller becomes very successful in getting people together.
  • Defied: Bob invites Amy to go for a walk when it's snowing and suggests playing in the show, throwing some snowball, kissing under snow-covered trees... Amy politely refuses to go because she doesn't feel the same way about Adam and she doesn't find snow particularly nice or romantic.
  • Discussed: "I hope Amy and Bob get together in the snow! It'll be about time. I just hope they aren't too cold..."
  • Conversed: "Maybe it'll be a better time for the shippers during the winter season?"
  • Deconstructed: Lovers Alice and Bob enjoys playing in the snow. At least one of them gets hypothermia as a result.
  • Reconstructed: Lovers Alice and Bob enjoys playing in the snow. Bob gets hypothermia. However, Alice nurses him back to health, and they grow closer.
  • Played For Laughs: Amy and Bob confess their love in the snow — and then their friends decide to celebrate with a snowball fight.
  • Played For Drama: Amy and Bob get together on the snow, but the light snow turns into a snowstorm. As the couple tries to find their way through the storm, they end up getting separated from each other.
  • Implied: It starts snowing. Best friends Bob and Amy longingly look at each other. Cut, episode ends. In the next episode, their Unresolved Sexual Tension smokes up the screen.
