Playing With / Skipping School

Go To

  • Basic Trope: A school-aged child does something else instead of showing up at school without permission.
  • Straight: Alice sneaks off away from the school when her parents send her off, to hang with her friends.
  • Exaggerated: Alice's entire class does this. The teachers don't even bother to ask why an entire class is absent at once.
  • Downplayed:
    • Alice skips the first hour of school, because there's a test she didn't prepare for.
    • Alice sneaks out of school before the final class.
  • Justified: Alice is a delinquent and/or hates school.
    • Alice is a senior, and today happens to be senior ditch day.
    • Alice has been worked to the bone by school and decides she needs a break.
    • Alice is going to the police station to report a teacher who has been making sexual advances towards her.
  • Inverted: Alice goes to school as soon as it opens to get help from a teacher whose class she is failing.
  • Subverted: Alice is recognized by her friend's mom, and runs to school in a panic.
    • Alice's parents receive a call from the school, asking why she's gone, because they didn't give a call saying she would be gone. They instantly realize what's going on and find their daughter skipping school.
    • Alice is not as young as she appears.
Cop: "Hey, kid! Shouldn't you be in school?"
    Alice: "I'M 24, FOR CHRIST'S SAKE!"
  • Double Subverted: ...Except when she's out of sight, she goes back to skipping school.
    • Senior ditch day is actually not today, but next week.
  • Parodied: Alice skips school, and runs into the principal.
"Every morning, I walk around town to make sure no one is skipping school. Detention for you!"
  • Zig-Zagged: Alice tries to skip school, but is recognized by her friend's mom and runs back. Only when she's gone, she goes back to skipping school...then she is spotted by her friend's dad, who is a police officer. He escorts her back to school in his car.
  • Averted: Alice goes to school.
  • Enforced:
  • Lampshaded:
"Ugh...I hate school...and there's a big test today, too. Screw This, I'm Outta Here"
  • Invoked: Well...yes. This trope is always intentional.
  • Defied: Alice's parents sternly warn her not to skip school.
    "WE WILL KNOW."
  • Discussed:
  • Conversed:
  • Implied: Alice is absent from school, and her parents did not give a call to explain that she would be gone.
  • Deconstructed: Alice is immediately recognized, and is subsequently reported for skipping school. She ends up with an In-School-Suspension.
    • Alice is caught skipping school on the day of a big test. The teacher does not let her make it up and it becomes a permanent zero on her record.
    • Gotta Pass the Class ensues as Alice does this successfully way too often.
    • Alice tries to apply to her dream college, but is denied due to a long history of truancy, and a low GPA as a result of her aforementioned truancy.
    • Alice walks home after successfully skipping school...only to see her mom waiting for her outside.
Alice's Mom: "Where have you been, young lady? You are grounded!"
  • Reconstructed: Alice is very careful around the homes of people who would recognize her.
    • Alice is already passing that particular class quite well, so it doesn't hurt her a lot.
    • Despite skipping school often, Alice is very studious and a hard worker, so she is more than able to make it up.
  • Played For Drama: Alice suffers from chronic depression after constantly being bullied at school, and decides that playing hooky can't possibly be worse. Until it gets her in trouble, compounding her issues further.
