Basic Trope: An eerie subway.

  • Straight: To get to their seedy destination, Alice and Bob have to go through a dark subway in disrepair filled with shady characters.
  • Exaggerated: The station is completely abandoned spare drug dealers and prostitutes, and Alice and Bob can't go anywhere in the station without being accosted by them. No space of wall or floor is devoid of graffiti. There are no trains and Alice and Bob have to walk through the desolate tunnel by candle light.
  • Downplayed: The station is still in use and most of the passengers are commuters, but it still is in need of some renovations and has some graffiti.
  • Justified:
    • The metro has been defunct for several decades.
    • The entire system is operational but it has struggled with many years of budget cuts and deferred maintenance.
  • Inverted: Alice and Bob go to a dark, but well-maintained subway with only a few people.
  • Subverted: Alice and Bob, warned of the seediness of the local subway, are surprised to find how relatively clean and safe the subway is.
  • Double Subverted: They take the train to a bad neighborhood to find that their stations are even worse than what they were told to expect.
  • Parodied: The station is called "Abandoned Station" and was apparently called such even when it was in use.
  • Zigzagged:
    • Some stations in the subway are more destitute than others.
    • The stations are perfectly safe during the day, but gets shadier at night.
  • Averted:
    • The metro is shiny and new and is perfectly safe.
    • The subway system is closed at night.
  • Enforced: The writer has claustrophobia and has always been unnerved by subways, so he sets his scary scene in a place he doesn't feel comfortable in.
  • Lampshaded: Conductor: "This is Drug Dealer's Paradise. Next stop, Hookerstown. Stand clear of the closing doors please."
  • Invoked: In order to get to a specific place nobody but them knows about, Alice and Bon willingly take the seedy subway.
  • Exploited: Alice and Bob are blackmailed into going into the subway for sinister purposes.
  • Deconstructed: Nobody uses the subway due to the danger present.
  • Defied:
    • Alice and Bob take a car.
    • The city pours a lot of investment into refurbishing and modernizing the metro system to a much higher standard.
  • Discussed:
Alice: I'd prefer to take the bus. The subways are always so scary.
  • Conversed: ???
  • Played for Laughs: Alice and Bob have hijinks in the seedy subway.
  • Played for Drama: Alice and Bob get murdered in the abandoned subway.
