Basic Trope: Metal scraping on a hard surface gets Played for Horror.

  • Straight: Alice, Bob, and Charlie hear the sound of metal scraping on wood. They instantly go on the alert, suspecting their nemesis Dracone, aka The Butcher, has taken his favorite knife to get revenge.
  • Exaggerated: Alice, Bob and Charlie tense up every time they hear metal scraping on something, even if something totally innocuous, like someone cutting carrots, is happening in the same room.
  • Downplayed: Alice, Bob, and Charlie hear the sound of metal scraping wood. It turns out to be Eva, who's suffered Sanity Slippage on a recent mission, proving she needs help.
  • Justified: Dracone is a Psycho Knife Nut.
  • Inverted: ???
  • Subverted: Alice, Bob and Charlie hear metal scraping on wood and flee the house...and Eva pokes her head out the door. She's been having fun dramatically playing celebrity chef and wonders why they ran off before she could present her newest culinary creation — garlic-fried shish kebabs.
  • Double Subverted: ...But then Eva hears metal scraping the wall. Knowing Bob, Alice, and Charlie are gone, she gets out of the house as quickly as possible.
  • Parodied: ???
  • Averted: ???
  • Enforced: ???
  • Lampshaded:
Bob: Unless you can see it's something like a cook with a cutting board, metal on a hard surface never bodes well.
  • Invoked: Dracone carries a knife and creates such a fearsome reputation that the mere sound of metal on something acts as a Trauma Button for the few survivors.
  • Exploited: Dracone knows metal on a hard surface scares people, so he scrapes his knife against the wall to terrify his victims while he's in stalking mode.
  • Defied: ???
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: "No matter how often scary movies use the old "metal on metal scrape", it always works."
