Playing With / Signing-Off Catchphrase

Go To

Basic Trope: At the end of every episode, a character says a certain phrase.

  • Straight: At the end of every episode of The Alice and Bob Show, Alice says, "This is Alice signing out until next time."
  • Exaggerated: At the end of every episode, it doesn't end until everyone says their own certain Character Catchphrase.
  • Downplayed: Alice only says that at each season finale.
  • Justified:
  • Inverted:
    • Alice says a particular phrase at the beginning of every episode. "This is Alice, signing in."
    • Alice says her catchphrase all the time, but never says it around the end of an episode.
  • Subverted: Alice says, "This is Alice signing out until next time" at the end of the first episode, but not the second.
  • Double Subverted: But she says it at the end of every other episode.
  • Parodied: Alice tries to say her catchphrase, but Bob interrupts her with, "No! Don't end the episode yet!"
  • Zigzagged: Mostly, Alice will say, "This is Alice signing out until next time" at the end of an episode, but sometimes another character will "sign out until next time" or nobody will say the catchphrase, or Alice will say a variation on the catchphrase.
  • Averted: There are no catchphrases for the end of the episode.
  • Lampshaded:
    Alice: "We're doomed!"
Bob: "We can't be doomed, because then the episode would have to end and you haven't signed out yet."
  • Enforced: Only sure fire way for little kids (the target audience) to know that the show is over.
  • Invoked: There's No Fourth Wall and Bob tells Alice to come up with something nifty to say at the end of every episode.
  • Exploited:
  • Defied: Alice refuses to say anything in particular at the end of each episode.
  • Discussed: "This is Alice signing out until next time, and by the way, if we had our own show, I think I'd say that at the end of each episode."
  • Conversed: "Why does she say that at the end of each episode?"
  • Implied:
  • Deconstructed:
  • Reconstructed:
  • Played for Laughs: There's a two-part episode and Alice can't decide whether to sign out or not at the end of Part One.
  • Played for Drama: Alice is one of those types who doesn't like goodbyes, so when she has to sign out until next time, she tears up while saying her line.
