Basic Trope: A character tries to shapeshift, and it fails in some way.
- Straight: Alice turns into a dog, but her lower half is still that of a human's.
- Exaggerated: Alice somehow gets something wrong every time she shapeshifts. Not only was her lower half still human when she tried to turn into a dog, but she still retained a dog's head for a while when she changed back. Then when she tried to turn into an eagle, she accidentally turned into a kangaroo instead.
- Downplayed: Alice turns herself into a dog, but still has weirdly humanlike eyes.
- Justified: Alice just got her powers and isn't quite used to figuring them out.
- Inverted:
- Alice tries to mess up while shapeshifting for some reason, but succeeds anyway.
- Alice understands how her shapeshifting abilities work perfectly, despite just having gotten them.
- Alice is supposed to be unwillingly turned into something that severely limits her abilities, but it goes horribly right due to Alice still being able to retain her mind in that form and even becoming more powerful than she already was.
- Subverted: It seems like Alice made a mistake while shapeshifting, because she's mostly human at the moment but has doglike arms. However, she was actually trying to do a Partial Transformation.
- Double Subverted: However, Alice also has a tail right now, which she didn't intend to bring out.
- Parodied: Alice has an Epic Fail every time she shapeshifts.
- Zig-Zagged: ???
- Averted: Alice does not shapeshift.
- Enforced: To give Alice some conflict when it comes to controlling her shapeshifting abilities besides just Involuntary Shapeshifting.
- Lampshaded: ???
- Invoked: Someone turns Alice into a dog, but only the top half.
- Exploited: Alice in her half-transformed state was made into an attraction in a freakshow by a travelling ringmaster.
- Defied: Alice doesn't shapeshift until she can properly figure out how it works.
- Discussed: ???
- Conversed: ???
- Played for Laughs: After being stuck with her top half as a dog, Alice starts aimlessly flailing around in circles and bumping into walls with no sense of coordination.
- Played for Drama: Alice is stuck that way with no idea of how to get back.
- Played for Horror: Alice shapeshifts into a dog, but her bottom half still needs time to catch up with the top half, resulting in a very slow and disturbing Painful Transformation.
- Implied: Alice tries to shapeshift into a dog, and all we get is a Scream Discretion Shot with a smash cut to Alice declaring she'll never do that again.
Back to Shapeshifting Failure... oh, I'm not supposed to have a raccoon's head right now!
