Basic Trope: A work has a more mature past than its more mainstream later installments imply.

  • Straight: The children's series White Kids Go To School was originally pitched as a South Park-esque animated sitcom, filled with adult jokes and cutting social satire.
  • Exaggerated: White Kids Go To School, an edutainment series meant for pre-schoolers, is a spin-off of a series of hardcore pornos.
  • Downplayed:
    • Akiko-chan wa Megami Desu Ka!? is a risqué, but still relatively clean spinoff manga of more explicit fare.
    • White Kids Go To School was originally pitched as an almost family-friendly series with some fanservice and sexual implications. It's remade into more of a standard children's series with very little Parental Bonus.
    • The censored version keeps everything the same plot-wise - only the sex scenes are made less explicit.
  • Justified: The adult, fanservice-heavy version was a batshit crazy editorial mandate and not what the creator originally intended on making.
  • Inverted:
  • Subverted: The trailer for the White Kids Go To School film seems to be more family-friendly than the original work... but when it gets released, it's just as bawdy and explicit as the original.
  • Double Subverted: Executive Meddling ensures that the sequel gets a PG or equivalent rating.
  • Parodied:
  • Zig Zagged:
    • White Kids Go To School changes tone frequently, one chapter being completely safe for work while the other has many suggestive and socially challenging elements true to the original series it comes from.
    • Akiko-chan wa Megami Desu Ka!?was originally clean and failed to take off, went indie, received a dirty adaptation that achieved some success and then later went back clean again when it really hit it huge.
  • Averted:
    • Any spinoffs are just as mature as the original work.
    • No spinoffs are made.
  • Enforced:
    • The executive who picked up White Kids Go To School in its original incarnation as an adult series about race relations and boob jokes isn't the one responsible for what's actually going to be shown on the channel, and the latter doesn't like anything offensive.
    • The original work was made in The Pre-Code Era, the sequels and spinoffs had to deal with The Hays Code.
  • Lampshaded: "It's the new and improved White Kids Go To School. Now 100% kid-friendly!"
  • Implied: An artist's style looks similar to a dirtier work but they have never confirmed it/been asked offically.
  • Invoked: Realizing the audience base will be limited the author creates a cleaner version of White Kids Go To School .
  • Exploited: A competing producer attempts to convince executives to cancel White Kids Go To School on the basis that kids might find out about its mature past.
  • Defied: Having used a concept once for a rather adult series, a writer decides to start fresh when she wants to make a children's series.
  • Discussed: "Why was our show like this!?"
  • Conversed: "What the H - E - double hell? Since when is this a kids' show?"
  • Plotted A Good Waste:
  • Played For Laughs:
    • A character who was central to the adult content of the original version of the series looks in her closet, sees a skeleton in a bikini, and slams the door shut — a Sight Gag about how she has some rather risqué skeletons in her closet.
    • Kaito is seen looking at the original H-manga Akiko came from. She is embarrassed about it and claims she needed the money, well that and the artist is a pervert.
  • Deconstructed: After a couple family-friendly episodes, it turns out that an evil dictator who looks like the show's producer is censoring the world of the show.
  • Reconstructed: The world after the dictator is defeated is still pretty family-friendly and idealistic, if much less repressed than before.
