Basic Trope: The armor is terrifying, but that's about it.

  • Straight: Emperor Evulz comes out to fight the heroes in a new terrifying suit of armor, replete with Spikes of Villainy and possessing Shoulders of Doom. It also makes him much slower than usual.
  • Exaggerated: Emperor Evulz comes out in a new suit of armor so terrifying that it paralyzes his enemies with fear — but it's also so heavy that Evulz likewise can't move.
  • Downplayed: Emperor Evulz' new armor is terrifying and, while it's relatively manageable, makes him slightly less fast and flexible than the heroes.
  • Justified:
    • Emperor Evulz is overconfident and focusing on form over function.
    • Evulz doesn't know anything about what makes armor practical or impractical, so he just designed it to look scary while genuinely not realizing that his design choices also made it cumbersome.
  • Inverted:
    • Emperor Evulz comes out to fight the heroes in a new terrifying suit of armor, which also enables him to move faster and use more muscle than usual.
    • Evulz's armor looks incredibly silly, but is also optimized for the best possible combination of protection, mobility and weight distribution, making him a difficult opponent once the fight begins.
  • Subverted:
    • Emperor Evulz comes out in a new terrifying suit of armor that gives the impression it must be hard to move in... but then he bolts toward Bob full speed, demonstrating that it isn't.
    • It just needs oiling.
  • Double Subverted:
  • Parodied: Emperor Evulz comes out in a terrifying new suit of armor...and he can't move at all in it. The heroes pick him up and carry him away captive as Evulz yells at them to tremble in fear.
  • Averted:
  • Enforced: ???
  • Lampshaded: "Hey Emperor Evulz! Nice armor — if you want to be a snail!"
  • Invoked: Charlie infiltrates Emperor Evulz' camp as an armor smith and purposely makes the armor more scary-looking than easy to move in to slow the enemy down.
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied:
    • Emperor Evulz sees that his armor-maker is letting form impact function. He kills him and hires a new, more practical, armor smith.
    • Evulz makes damned sure that every bit of the armor that is scary has a damned good reason to be there. Such as concealing hydraulics, reinforcing weak spots to prevent enemies from exploiting them or being capable of holding half a ton of C-4 and a speaker for Evulz to use as a lure for the enemy… and claymore mine.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: "Get a load of the Big Bad's armor in this movie! How clunky is that?"
  • Implied: Bob and his True Companions come back chuckling from their latest battle, and when The Mentor asks what's so funny, Alice says something about how Evulz's new armor was scary...until the fighting started.
  • Played for Laughs: Evulz's armor is the Rice Burner of scary and impractical armors, painted in what should be blood red but looks pink, with a helmet that is supposed to be a dragon but looks like a teapot, and Evulz has already stabbed himself five or six times with the integrated blades. Even the background music, which begins as incredibly intimidating, gets on the joke by switching to tubas or kazoos.

Ugh! Help me take off this Scary Impractical Armor.
