Playing With / Right for the Wrong Reasons

Go To

Basic Trope: A person's conclusion on something is right, but they get their reasons for it wrong.

  • Straight: Detective Bob is investigating Alice's murder, and concludes that Charlie, her friend, did it because she inadvertently caused his mother's death; it is later revealed that Charlie did murder Alice, but did so due to a large sum of money he owed her.
  • Exaggerated: Detective Bob concludes that Charlie killed Alice due to causing her mother's death, giving her AIDS, and beating her in a video game; all his reasoning is wrong, but his conclusion is correct.
  • Downplayed: Detective Bob concludes that Charlie killed Alice due to causing her mother's death; it was partially his reason, but also because he wanted to take all her money.
  • Justified: People have murdered others for accidentally killing their family members or loved ones; this just wasn't the case now.
  • Inverted: Entertainingly Wrong
  • Subverted:
    • It then turns out that Charlie did kill Alice for accidentally killing his mother, and the money was just the icing on the cake.
    • Charlie is then found innocent because he took the money after Dave killed Alice, meaning that Bob was completely wrong.
  • Double Subverted: It later turns out that Charlie knew about the money all along, but figured it would be better if he confessed to a crime of passion rather than premeditated murder.
  • Parodied: Detective Bob concludes Charlie killed Alice and "reasons" this using Insane Troll Logic; he still ends up being correct.
  • Zigzagged: ???
  • Averted:
    • Bob was wrong; Charlie did not kill Alice.
    • Bob was right; Charlie did kill Alice to avenge his mother.
  • Enforced: ???
  • Lampshaded: "Huh! Guess I was both right and wrong!"
  • Invoked: ???
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied: Bob refuses to come to any conclusions unless he knows something.
  • Discussed: "Have you ever gotten the right conclusion despite flubbing up the facts?!"
  • Conversed: "In this detective show, Bob is right even when he's wrong!"
  • Implied: ???
  • Deconstructed: Because they keep getting things correct but for all of the wrong reasons, they start to get incredibly careless and fall into a pattern of habits where they start assuming that everything they do will ultimately be correct even if their methods and reasons are completely wrong. This eventually blows up in their face when the wrong reasons eventually lead to the wrong conclusions. And because the habit is so ingrained at this point, they can't bring themselves to admit to the horrible mistake they've made. As it turns out, just because you were right for the wrong reasons doesn't inherently mean that you'll ALWAYS be right, and that both proper reasoning and proper conclusion are important in any situation.
  • Reconstructed: ???
  • Played for Laughs: ???
  • Played for Drama: ???
  • Played for Horror: Charlie killed Alice, but the reason was because he was a zombie or a Spree Killer.
