Playing With / Reminiscing About Your Victims

Go To

Basic Trope: Someone fondly recalls a person they victimized.

  • Straight: During a fight with Alice, Emperor Evulz reminisces about torturing her brother Bob the year before.
  • Exaggerated: During a fight with Alice, Emperor Evulz reminisces about torturing her brother Bob, mind-raping her boyfriend Charlie, maiming her best friend Eva, and every last petty thing he's done to someone.
  • Downplayed: Emperor Evulz is simply content with how he hurt his victims.
  • Justified: Emperor Evulz is a Sadist.
  • Inverted:
  • Subverted: As she attacks Evulz, Alice yells, "This is for Bob!" Emperor Evulz smiles and says, "Oh yes, Bob...who was Bob again?"
  • Double Subverted: When Alice mentions some of the times Bob foiled him, Evulz remembers who Bob was, and proceeds to reminisce about what a fighter he was and how terrible his fate was.
  • Zig-Zagged: As she attacks Evulz, Alice yells, "This is for Bob!" Emperor Evulz smiles and says, "Oh yes, Bob...who was Bob again?" When Alice mentions some of the times Bob foiled him, Evulz remembers who Bob was, and proceeds to reminisce about what a fighter he was and how terrible his fate was...However, it turns out that Emperor Evulz actually didn't kill Bob; he saw him as a Worthy Opponent and was genuinely lamenting his loss, albeit in an easily misunderstood way.
  • Averted: Emperor Evulz is an Elective Mute.
  • Enforced: The author originally wrote the fight scene without Evulz gloating, but the editor thought that it would make the audience especially eager to see Alice defeat him.
  • Parodied: Emperor Evulz waxes poetic about the time he annoyed Bob by poking him continually.
  • Lampshaded:
Alice: Every villain I've ever met needs to gloat about his victims.
  • Invoked: Charlie knows Alice fights better when she's angry and not overthinking things, so he lures Evulz into doing something that he knows will enrage her to shorten the battle.
  • Exploited: Alice uses Evulz' distraction at the good memories to slip a blow past his defense.
  • Defied: Emperor Evulz is about to start reminiscing about torturing Bob when Alice knocks him unconscious.
  • Discussed:
Alice: *shudders* I can tell you enjoyed it.
Emperor Evulz: I was all too happy to do it.
  • Conversed: "Why do they take some kind of twisted pride out of what they've done? It's repulsive." "They consider it their life's work, in a way. Some people take up cruelty as a habit."
  • Played for Drama: Emperor Evulz' fondness over what he's done makes him particularly dangerous, since he'll be all too happy to add another one of those moments to his collection of memories whenever he's confronted.
  • Played for Horror: Emperor Evulz is a sadistic psychopath who relives every horrible act he's ever taken all throughout his life, and shows absolutely no remorse in his confessions, which is enough to earn him the title of The Dreaded.

Oh, the main page...so much fun to deface...
