Basic Trope: A character chooses not to save the people he doesn't like.
- Straight: Hiro sees Ichigo surrounded by an army of Mooks. When Ichigo asks for his help, Hiro refuses.
- Exaggerated:
- Hiro sees Emperor Evulz hanging on the edge of a cliff. Hiro not only refuses to save him, but also actively drops him to his death.
- Hiro hates Ichigo so much that he sends him right in front of the army of mooks in order for him to be killed.
- Downplayed:
- Hiro walks away when he sees that Ichigo asks for his help.
- Hiro would save Ichigo but he is carrying two unconscious bystanders on his shoulders, and isn't going to risk their lives for Ichigo's sake.
- Hiro hesitates before attempting to save Ichigo, which unfortunately comes too late.
- Justified:
- Ichigo is Hiro's sworn enemy (in any capacity). If they changed positions, Ichigo would literally do the same.
- Ichigo was always an unrepentant Jerkass; Hiro believed that him being outmatched by Evulz' men would serve him right.
- Hiro and Ichigo had a falling out.
- Hiro had asked for Ichigo to help him in a similar situation in the past only to be turned away. This is Hiro's revenge.
- Ichigo's predicament is his own fault because he didn't listen to Hiro's warnings. Ergo, Hiro sees no need to stick his neck out for Ichigo.
- Saving Ichigo would put Hiro's life at great risk, and Hiro isn't going to risk his life for someone he hates.
- Hiro saved Ichigo's life before, and Ichigo repaid him with betrayal. Hiro won't let that happen again.
- Hiro has a grudge against Ichigo for what he did to him years ago.
- Hiro hates Ichigo for being a part of another group.
- Hiro, an arrogant Jerkass sees Ichigo as someone who is inferior; he finds it demeaning to rescue someone who is beneath his level.
- Hiro sees Ichigo as an annoyance, if not an unpleasant jerk. He feels that saving him would be a waste of time.
- Hiro believes that saving Ichigo would rob him of a lesson he needs to learn.
- While Hiro believes in Thou Shalt Not Kill, Ichigo is a Complete Monster who is deemed too dangerous to live. Hiro won't kill Ichigo himself, but he's not gonna do anything to prevent something else from doing him in.
- Inverted:
- Subverted: Hiro refuses to rescue Ichigo and turns away...all right before taking out all of the mooks at the very last minute.
- Double Subverted: After Hiro cleaned house, he leaves a beaten Ichigo stranded, although his ingratitude didn't help matters.
- Parodied: Ichigo complains that the house ran out of food and that Hiro should get the food. Hiro refuses... But when he opens the fridge, he screams at the sight of the empty fridge.
- Zig Zagged: ???
- Averted: Hiro saves Ichigo from the army's attack.
- Enforced:
- The meddling executives believe that the audience is tired of these goody-goody heroes who always ending up saving people who don't deserve it.
- The original script had Hiro rescuing Ichigo, but for some reason, Ichigo has to be written out of the series. The executives figure out that since Hiro hates Ichigo anyway, it makes sense to kill off Ichigo by having Hiro refuse to rescue him.
- The writers are as tired of Ichigo being an asshole as the readers so they decide to make him sweat. A lot.
- Lampshaded:
- "Where are you going?! I thought you were a good guy!"
- Or:Melissa: Why didn't Hiro go out to save Ichigo?
Jacob: The question should be why would Hiro want to save Ichigo? - "Since when was finding someone annoying reason enough to justify leaving them for dead?"
- Invoked:
- Because others hate Ichigo, they convince Hiro not to save him.
- Ichigo is threatened with not being saved if he doesn't get his act together and start being nicer.
"One of these days your gonna be in the stickiest situation you'll ever be in... and Hiro ain't gonna pull you out of it. You know why? You're a terrible person, and Hiro knows it." - Exploited: Ichigo doesn't want to be rescued, so he tries to make Hiro hate him.
- Defied:
- "Despite the way you treated me, I will save you anyways."
- The other heroes convince Hiro to save Ichigo because despite all that he's done, he's still part of the team.
- Ichigo made sure to set a few particularly nasty surprises in place that will automatically go off in the event of his untimely demise or severe injury and thus force Hiro to save him every time he is in trouble, no matter what.
- Discussed: "You can't just leave him there to get killed by the mooks! I know how you feel about him, but it's still your duty to help him."
- Conversed: "If there was someone who hated me in need of help, I'd probably do the same thing Hiro did in that episode."
- Deconstructed:
- Hiro's refusal to save Ichigo leads to his reputation as a hero damaged and he is ostracized by everyone.
- Ichigo survives without Hiro's help and later attacks him in revenge.
- Ichigo dies, and Hiro feels guilty about his refusal to help — after all, Ichigo's arrogance may have been annoying, but he really didn't deserve to die for it.
- Reconstructed: Hiro, swallowing his pride, would then decide to rescue Ichigo who behaves like an Entitled Bastard to him. Once everyone learned how badly Ichigo acted, they all realized that it was a bad idea for Hiro to rescue him after all.
- Played For Drama: Hiro refuses to help Ichigo, much to the shock of his teammates who call him out on this. There is an intense argument between Hiro and his teammates which consists of Hiro justifying his refusal to save Ichigo and the team considering him as less of a human being because of said refusal.
- Played For Horror: Hiro just stands there and watches as the mooks brutally kill Ichigo.
