Basic Trope: The recoil from a gun can be used to propel the wielder backwards.
- Straight: Alice is pushed backward along the ground as she fires a Gatling Gun.
- Exaggerated: Every single one of Alice's Standard FPS Guns can push her backwards at hundreds of miles per hour just by holding down the trigger.
- Downplayed: Every shot of the BFG pushes Alice back a good few inches, but no other weapon is powerful enough to do this.
- Justified:
- Alice's gun has a ludicrous amount of recoil, and she is very light.
- Alice is standing on some Frictionless Ice when she fires her gun.
- Alice forgot to engage the ground anchoring clamps.
- Inverted: Alice is pulled in the direction she fires a bizarre prototype gun.
- Subverted: A few characters can be heard discussing this trope before Alice picks up the gatling gun, though it's not possible to fly backwards with the weapon in-game...
- Alice flies backwards after firing a shotgun but her legs are shown twitching, she jumped backwards at the shock of the noise and recoil.
- Double Subverted: ...unless you track down a certain upgrade for the gatling gun, in which case Alice can propel herself backward while firing it.
- Parodied: Alice is blown backwards at utterly ridiculous speeds and cannot control where she's going. Hilarity Ensues.
- Zig-Zagged: Alice can only use some of her guns to propel herself backwards. The gatling gun and BFG will always work for this, her shotgun and machine gun both require a certain upgrade, her Energy Weapon can only do this under certain conditions, and her starting pistol simply cannot do this at all.
- Averted: Alice cannot use the recoil of guns to push herself backwards, regardless of the context.
- Enforced: A popular game uses this trope extensively. Executives make it a requirement for the developers to include, even though their game is a more realistic first-person shooter.
- Lampshaded: "This gun seems way too heavy to let me boost backward like this. Shouldn't this be hurting my arms or something?"
- Invoked: When told that her next mission will end in an escape sequence, Alice makes sure to bring her gatling gun.
- Exploited: Alice takes out her gatling gun and starts firing it backwards to Outrun the Fireball.
- Defied: Alice realizes she's too light to wield the gatling gun without propelling herself backwards, so she puts on some iron boots to weigh herself down.
- Discussed: "Hey, uh, didn't the last guy that tried to use that gatling gun over there accidentally launch himself off the cliff?"
- Conversed: "I wouldn't use that gatling gun over there; they usually send you flying backwards in video games."
- Implied: When trying to track down a gunslinger, an oddly-spaced stream of bullet holes leads up to a ledge several times Alice's height.
- Deconstructed:
- Alice unceremoniously breaks her arms when attempting to utilize the gatling gun's recoil and ultimately goes nowhere.
- Alice propels herself with the gatling gun so much that she's out of ammo by the time she runs into a bad guy.
- Reconstructed:
- The gun Alice wields is specifically designed to have massive recoil while not endangering its wielder.
- Alice has several extra gatling guns in case her current one is out of ammo.
