Basic Trope: Writers intentionally use anachronisms to the point the only thing setting it apart from the present are a few plot-based ideas.

  • Straight: Queen Elizabeth I uses a microphone in a speech and uses an electric lamp.
  • Exaggerated:
    • She also has a Twitter feed, an iPod full of artists that won't be born for another 400 years, and talks in Totally Radical hip-hop slang.
    • The only indication the story is set in the past are calendars.
  • Downplayed: Alice from The '60s has modern equipment around her house.
  • Justified: The Alien Space Bats or the time-traveller who insisted on Giving Radio to the Romans engineered the setting to be this way. (This is given no more than a passing mention.)
  • Inverted: Twenty-first century Bob uses only 16th century equipment.
  • Subverted:
    • Alice picks up what appears to be a cell phone but turns out to be a piece of obscure technology from The '60s.
    • It turns out that it was only a Medieval-themed amusement park, and "Elizabeth" is yelled at by her boss for breaking character.
  • Double Subverted:
    • Alice says "Hey Charles, check out my new smartphone!"
    • The Medieval-themed amusement park is located in Ancient Rome
  • Parodied: This trope is often used for parody of Anachronism Stew in more serious works.
  • Zig Zagged: The historical accuracy of the work varies.
  • Averted: The work is completely period accurate.
  • Enforced:
    • The film uses Rule of Funny heavily. Elizabeth I pulling out a cell phone is a throwaway gag.
    • "We're setting this during Queen Elizbeth's era, but I don't have the time to research the period." "Eh, just let it be inaccurate. If it's over-the-top enough, the audience will think it's funny."
    • The film centers on What if X had Y?
  • Lampshaded: "This, good Queen, is a cell phone. I have brought it from the far away distant land known as 2008."
  • Invoked: Brilliant inventor Danny from The '40s invents an early cell phone in an Alternate History story, and cell phones become common place by The '50s, making it look like this trope.
  • Exploited: The above inventor makes a fortune with the patents of such revolutionary ideas.
  • Defied: ???
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
  • Deconstructed: This setting is an Alien Space Bats alternate history in which Queen Elizabeth I genuinely does have modern technology. The result is a Low Culture, High Tech society that commits many atrocities using their technology.
