Basic Trope: Anyone can dream the future, even people who don't have Psychic Powers.
- Straight: Alice has a dream in which her workmate Bob and his wife Carol have a baby. When she shows up to work the next day, Bob is talking about how he's going to be a dad.
- Exaggerated: Everyone can very accurately predict the future, but the paranormal has been established not to exist.
- Downplayed:
- Alice is a bit magic-y but can't generally predict the future.
- Alice's dream gets the baby's name and sex wrong but it does predict that Bob and Carol will have a baby.
- Justified:
- An actual psychic manipulated Alice's dream.
- It was just a very strange coincidence.
- In this universe, everybody has one moment in their lives when they randomly have a prophetic dream.
- Bob had been talking about having a kid with Carol, so it went into Alice's dream.
- The Powers That Be are CENSORED tired of those Man In The Middle Prophets screwing up their warnings, and have gone back to direct messages.
- Inverted: Alice accurately dreams about something Bob did when he was a kid. She and Bob didn't know each other as kids.
- Subverted: It turns out that Bob was wrong about Carol being pregnant.
- That was just the first manifestation of Bob's precognition.
- Double Subverted:
- Then, Alice has a different dream that comes true.
- Carol missed her period, her pregnancy test came back negative, but it was a false negative and she actually is pregnant.
- Carol gets pregnant later.
- Then, Bob dreams that Alice will get a dog. She does.
- Parodied:
- Everyone treats psychic dreams casually as something normal.
- Alice's extremely surreal dream comes true despite not seeming possible.
- Zigzagged: Some dreams come true, some don't.
- Averted:
- Nobody has prophetic dreams.
- Only psychics have prophetic dreams.
- Enforced:
- Lampshaded: "When I said 'my dreams will come true', I didn't mean literally! And I'm not even psychic!"
- Invoked: An actual psychic puts predictions into Alice's dreams.
- Exploited: Whenever Alice needs to know something, she takes a nap.
- Defied: The predictions unnerve Alice, and dhe refuses to read into them.
- Discussed: "Is it possible to have a psychic dream if you're not, y'know, psychic?"
- Conversed: "How on Earth did that character predict the future in her dream?! Psychics don't even exist in that universe!"
- Implied: Alice has her dream and the next time we see Carol, she appears pregnant or is holding a baby but we're never told if the baby is hers or if she really is pregnant.
- Deconstructed:
- Reconstructed:
- Played for Laughs: Alice's dreams predict very specific things, like "Bob will be very bored at three in the afternoon", "Carol will be eating ice cream the next time I see her", and "I will see a painting of the solar system".
- Played for Drama: Alice has a prophetic dream about Bob getting severely injured.
