Playing With / Princess Protagonist

Go To

Basic Trope: Protagonist is a daughter of a king or queen regnant.
  • Straight: Princess Alice is the protagonist.
  • Exaggerated: Despite the series taking place across many different genres, from fantasy to sci-fi to Film Noir to horror and beyond, the protagonist of each installment is always a princess, even in cases where the work has to bend to make her one.
  • Downplayed: Alice is princess only in a technicality and certainly doesn't act like one.
  • Justified: The show is a Feminist Fantasy that takes place in a World of Action Girls. Alice is made a Pretty Princess Powerhouse to subvert two very sexist tropes associated with princesses.
  • Inverted:
  • Gender-Inverted: Prince Alex is the main character.
  • Subverted: Mid-way through the story, it's revealed that Alice is an imposter.
  • Double Subverted: Second movie reveals King Bob isn't actually her father, however the third movie uncovers Alice to be a daughter of another king.
  • Parodied: The characters are aware of their existence in a show. When one day Alice resigns her role as the main character, the rest of the cast is forced to hold auditions to replace her, and refuse any girl who isn't a princess.
  • Zig-Zagged: Alice isn't really a princess, just acting as one in a play. But she turns out to be an Honorary Princess. Only she isn't she just has a Princess Phase. Well, actually, she took an ancestry test and turns out to have descended from African royalty. But that ancestry test was a hoax. Also, she's a Decoy Protagonist.
  • Averted: Alice is not a princess.
    • Or she is, but she's not the main character. Or she's neither the main character or a princess.
  • Enforced: The show is aimed at little girls, whom the executives feel will only want to watch a show if it features a princess as the star.
  • Lampshaded: "If you haven't noticed, I'm the princess, I'm the hero."
  • Invoked: Alice, knowing she's in a show, intentionally marries a prince so that the little girls watching can see their favorite main character become a princess, showing that they can live out their dream, too!
  • Exploited: Alice is told that if she marries Prince Jamal, she will get her own show.
  • Defied: "Just because this show is about me, does NOT mean I have to be a princess."
    • "Just because I'm the daughter of a queen doesn't mean the focus has to be on me! Let some other girl have the spotlight for once!"
    • "Honestly, who cares about Princess Alice? Focus on Peasant Girl Diana instead!"
  • Discussed: "I don't know who I thought I was competing against. Alice is a princess, of course she'd be the main character."
  • Conversed: "Why are the female main characters of movies always princesses? Don't get me wrong, I like princesses and all, but it's not like every male protagonist has to be a prince!"
  • Plotted A Good Waste: The writers wanted to show a princess that branched outside of the stereotypes.

Only a true princess may go back to the unabridged version.
