Playing With / Prayer of Malice

Go To

Basic Trope: A character is praying for a deity to be cruel and petty.

  • Straight: Summer is praying to God that Danny will die a horrible death.
  • Exaggerated: Summer is praying to God that Danny will be sent to Hell so he will burn forever.
  • Downplayed: Summer is praying to God that Danny will lose his money.
  • Justified:
    • Summer is a deluded religious follower who is angry at Danny for disagreeing with her beliefs.
    • Danny is an unapologetic unrepentant monster who raped and murdered countless innocent people and got away with it by fleeing to a country that doesn't extradite. One of Danny's victims was Summer's baby son, so naturally Summer wants him to suffer for the evils he committed.
    • Summer thinks she's righteous and Danny isn't. Therefore, those who are not righteous must deserve to be prayed negatively.
    • Summer is an impressionable child.
    • Summer is a child who has Abusive Parents and begs God to kill her parents after being beaten or raped by them.
  • Inverted:
    • Danny has an Incurable Cough of Death and Summer prays for a miraculous recovery.
    • Aerith, a young elf child, prays for Grandesh, God of Evil, to help her family out of poverty.
  • Subverted: Summer is angry at Danny, but prays that good things happen to him.
  • Double Subverted: ...to draw other people's jealous rage.
  • Parodied: Summer prays to God to make Danny trip on a banana.
  • Zig Zagged: Summer's prayers vary from tender and merciful to harsh and unforgiving.
  • Averted:
    • Summer's prayers are kind-hearted to Danny.
    • Summer doesn't pray to God at all.
  • Enforced:
    • The author wants to show us that Summer is a creepy fundamentalist and this is one of the ways she does so.
    • The story is about Jake's family mourning him in different ways after Danny tortures him to death. In order to talk about how anger ties into grief and how it is a natural reaction, the authors showed Jake's normally sweet daughter Summer praying for his murderer to be tortured forever in Hell.
  • Lampshaded: "You're praying that I die? Your God must be evil."
  • Invoked: God tells Summer that Danny has transgressed against Him and commands her to pray that bad things will befall him, even if she doesn't have any personal issues with Danny.
  • Exploited: God tells Summer to pray for curses and punishment to make Him powerful.
  • Defied:
    • God tells Summer to not pray for bad things to happen to Danny since that's not how He operates on prayer.
    • Summer is annoyed at Danny, but doesn't want to pray for bad things to happen to anyone, so she goes for the passive-agressive approach and prays to God to "grant Danny wisdom so he can stop being a jackass."
  • Discussed: "And to think that you religious folk say that God is merciful."
  • Conversed: "I always change the channel whenever Summer recites her scary, violent prayers."
  • Deconstructed:
    • Summer's prayers reveal that she's dangerously unstable and planning to take matters into her own hands if God doesn't.
    • Summer's prayers are answered in a way too horrifying for even her.
  • Reconstructed:
    • Summer takes matters into her own hands and murders Danny in a fit of rage. But after police discover a stash of child pornography in Danny's house the jury refuses to find Summer guilty. She goes scot-free and her community praises her.
    • Even if Summer was horrified by what happened to Danny, he still deserved it for all the people he hurt.
  • Played For Laughs: Summer's parents are horrified at Summer praying to God to please hurt Danny, but because they firmly believe that people should do their own dirty work.
  • Played For Drama: Summer prayed to God for something bad to happen to Danny in a moment of blind desperation at seeing Danny being such a blatant Karma Houdini, and when something bad finally happens to Danny Summer begins to feel horrified at the possibility she has traded off her chances of going to Heaven for this.
  • Played For Horror: Summer's prayers are answered, but the answerer isn't God. It's something worse, much worse.
