Basic Trope: A certain power, with some form of non-monetary cost.

  • Straight: Trope Magic, a dangerous magic art allowing you to rewrite reality using tropes, is more powerful than most magic but will ruin your life if you use it too much.
  • Exaggerated: Trope Magic has the power to destroy or create multiverses, but its usage is so disastrous it will eat your soul, cause random apocalyptic events, kill you, or all of the above.
  • Downplayed: Trope Magic can bend reality in minor ways normal magic cannot, but has a tendency to cause mild bad luck.
  • Justified: Trope Magic channels the luck and happiness from the world around it as a fuel source, thus using it up if used too much.
  • Inverted: Trope Magic is not only incredibly powerful, but brings its user good luck as a mere side-effect.
  • Subverted: Trope Magic is thought to ruin your life, but really it is just nocebo, and has no actual harmful effects.
  • Double Subverted: Trope Magic is said to ruin our life, but seemingly has no harmful effects. However, what is not known is that it is actually eroding the very nature of the universe with every use.
  • Parodied: Trope Magic comes with a price... Only $30 dollars at your local Trope Mart!
  • Zig-Zagged: Trope Magic has a bad reputation for something unrelated to it and is secretly eroding the fabric of the universe. Except it is replacing it with something better. Something better that will destroy everything that was there before.
  • Averted: Power is free, or there is no power.
  • Enforced: Trope Co. doesn't want the hero's magic to be too story-breaking, so they bring in drawbacks.
  • Lampshaded: "My life got a lot worse since I started using Trope Magic."
  • Invoked: A malicious entity invents Trope Magic to spread misery.
  • Exploited: The villain knows that Trope Magic erodes reality, and is using it flippantly to let an eldritch abomination into reality.
  • Defied: Intelligent wizards come up with a form of Trope Magic that doesn't ruin your life.
  • Discussed: "Let me guess. These super-cool magic powers have some odd cost?"
  • Conversed: "Bob! Stop using Trope Magic!" Alice screams at her TV, getting way too into her show.
  • Implied: Every character who is shown using Trope Magic becomes more unhinged with each passing episode.
  • Deconstructed: No one uses Trope Magic, because the costs outweigh the benfits.
  • Reconstructed: Trope Magic is addictive along with its other costs, thus meaning that those who use it don't care that they're getting the raw deal.
  • Played for Laughs: A power exists that can eat your very soul. That power is the best tapdancing skills in the universe.
  • Played for Drama: Trope Magic gradually causes the protagonist's mind to break down.
  • Played for Horror: Trope Magic unleashes hundreds of lovecraftian horrors when it is unleashed.
