Basic Trope: A power-up that intentionally hinders the player.
- Straight:
- Alice finds a power-up, and becomes poisoned when she picks it up.
- Alice picks up a power-up and loses a small amount of health.
- Alice picks up a power-up and briefly cannot attack.
- Alice picks up a power-up and briefly cannot move.
- Exaggerated:
- Alice picks up a power-up and instantly explodes into Ludicrous Gibs.
- Alice picks up a power-up and her entire party dies.
- Alice picks up a power-up and her save file gets deleted.
- Downplayed: Alice picks up a power-up and... nothing happens.
- Justified:
- Alice is allergic to the power-up.
- The power-up is actually poisonous.
- Inverted: Alice falls into an obvious trap and gets money.
- Subverted: Alice finds a power-up and is damaged for half her health, but gains the ability to One-Hit Kill everything around her for a short period of time.
- Double Subverted: Alice dies immediately after her One-Hit Kill ability wears off.
- Parodied: Alice buys a power-up from the power-up store, and instantly dies.
- Zig Zagged:
- Alice finds a power-up that has a 50-50 chance to either boost her damage or poison her.
- The power-up does some benefit and some harm to Alice.
- Averted:
- There are no harmful power-ups in the game.
- The game does not have any powerups at all.
- Enforced: The game would have been way too easy if the Developers did not include harmful powerups.
- Lampshaded: "You shouldn't touch that item - it will hurt you!"
- Invoked: The Big Bad knows that Alice is coming after him so he hides harmful powerups around his Supervillain Lair.
- Exploited: Alice is in Super Mode but needs to die. Fortunately, there is a power-up that turns off her invincibility.
- Defied: "Why bother placing false powerups when we can simply have more Mooks in the area?"
- Discussed: ???
- Conversed: "Ugh, I got the power-up that makes me lose health again! Why did they even put this in the game?"
