Basic Trope: It's hard to enjoy ordinary things when you've experienced the best possible thing.

  • Straight: Bob uses a magical artifact that can give its owner one day of ultimate pleasure. He quickly becomes depressed when the day is over, as everything now seems worse.
  • Exaggerated: Bob uses a magical artifact to experience a day of pure pleasure. He goes insane and then kills himself because he can't deal with the world after experiencing such bliss.
  • Downplayed: Bob uses a magical artifact to enjoy a day of ultimate pleasure. It takes him a while to get back to being able to enjoy a normal day again, and he still gets cravings every once in a while.
  • Justified: People do tend to adapt to the standards they've experienced.
  • Inverted: Bob uses an artifact that gives the user one day of absolute horror and despair. After the day is over, things that would normally scare or sadden him have no effect because of what he went through.
  • Subverted:
    • Bob uses the artifact of perfection and becomes depressed afterwards when he deals with everyday life. But it turns out the artifact is enchanted to make the user depressed after they use it.
    • Bob eats a golden ice cream cake. He is somewhat disappointed when he must stop eating, but quickly gets over it and moves on.
  • Double Subverted:
    • The depression-inducing enchantment is removed from the artifact. Bob tries to use it again, but it still makes him depressed.
    • When Bob tries to eat regular food, he finds that it tastes like garbage, and golden ice cream cakes are the only food that can satisfy him anymore.
  • Parodied: Bob uses I Can't Believe It's Not Heroin! labelled "Perfection."
  • Zig-Zagged: Bob experiences a wide range of emotions in the spectrum of normality after having his perfect experience.
  • Averted: No one experiences the best possible thing.
  • Enforced: The author is trying to make a point about contentment.
  • Lampshaded:
Bob: You wouldn't think perfection could be bad. But the world isn't perfect.
  • Invoked: The creator of the artifact was trying to create a joy-based Brown Note.
  • Exploited: Emperor Evulz makes sure Bob will find and use the artifact. Even if he doesn't go insane or kill himself, it will make a nice parting shot at Bob so what he wished for no longer has the same allure.
  • Defied: Bob thinks about using the artifact, but he's heard stories about its effects on people and ultimately decides to leave well enough alone so he doesn't suffer such drastic mood whiplash.
  • Discussed: "An artifact of ultimate pleasure? If I had that, I don't think I could ever go back to enjoying normal things."
  • Conversed: "The guy in this movie just found an artifact that'll give him perfection. What'll you bet everyday stuff is a letdown afterwards? I've seen enough of these to know, there's always a catch."
  • Implied: Bob is normally a plucky and energetic person. However, when he comes home from his latest adventure, he is utterly depressed.
Alice: Well? Did you find the artifact of ultimate pleasure?
    Bob: Yes.
    Alice: How was it?
Bob: It worked exactly as advertised.
