Basic Trope: Someone uses a Barrier-Busting Blow to break through a door.
- Straight: Smash kicks a door open that he needs to get through.
- Exaggerated: Smash kicks the door and takes out the door, the entire wall, and in extreme cases, the whole building.
- Downplayed: The door is opened just enough by the kick that he can get through.
- Justified: It's an emergency situation and the door has to be opened immediately, so there's no time for subtlety.
- Subverted:
- Smash kicks the door, but the door no sells the hit.
- Or Smash looks like he's about to kick the door, but instead he politely knocks.
- Double Subverted:
- Smash tries again, and the door finally breaks
- Smash somehow manages to break the door with a slight knock.
- Inverted: Berserk Board Barricade or Furniture Blockade.
- Parodied: Smash barely touches the door and it breaks.
- Averted: Smash's partner Grab stops the door breaking by reminding Smash that We Have the Keys, or opens the unlocked door.
- Defied: Smash isn't that barbaric! He just knocks politely and opens the door once it's unlocked.
- Zig-Zagged: In a long line of doors, some doors Smash gets through by kicking, and others he lets Grab open in more subtle ways.
- Enforced: This is used as an Establishing Character Moment for Smash as The Big Guy who brute forces his way through things.
- Lampshaded:Grab: I don't know why I keep bothering to steal the keys since you always insist on kicking the door down.
- Discussed:Damsel in Distress Alice: You know Smash and Grab are going to bust through that door any minute now to rescue me, right?
- Conversed:Audience Member Joe: Classic trope. Big guy kicks the door in.
- Invoked:
- Exploited: Big Bad Bob, knowing Smash’s penchant for kicking through doors, rigs the door to his lair with a trap that is set off by the kick, or has the door made of a material too difficult for Smash to kick through.
- Played For Laughs: Smash kicks the door open for no particular reason.
- Played For Drama: Smash kicks a door open so hard that it flies off the hinges and kills someone in the room.
- Played For Horror: Smash is a Stock Slasher and this is how the trope is played for horror.
- Implied: The heroes are shown in front of a door, with Smash readying up his left foot, then it cuts to the villain's office, with the heroes running in and Smash making a slight limp with his left leg.
