Basic: A character is much known by their nickname.
- Straight: Robert is called "Bob" by pretty much everyone he knows.
- Exaggerated: Robert's birth certificate says "Bob" on it, yet somehow Robert is still his real name.
- Downplayed: Robert goes by his real name professionally. Otherwise, he goes by Bob.

- "Bob" is widely known to be the shorthand version of Robert.
- You Called Me "X"; It Must Be Serious; Robert's friends and family call him "Bob" a lot so that he knows it's an emergency when he's called "Robert".
- Bob's real name isn't actually Robert; in reality, he is the The Unpronounceable. His friends just decided to call him "Bob", so they could actually address him without sounding stupid.
- Inverted: Robert is called by his real name by everyone. Even his children.
- Subverted: Robert's friends eventually start calling him by his real name.
