Playing With / Only Known by Their Nickname

Go To

Basic: A character is much known by their nickname.

  • Straight: Robert is called "Bob" by pretty much everyone he knows.
  • Exaggerated: Robert's birth certificate says "Bob" on it, yet somehow Robert is still his real name.
  • Downplayed: Robert goes by his real name professionally. Otherwise, he goes by Bob.
  • Justified:
    • "Bob" is widely known to be the shorthand version of Robert.
    • You Called Me "X"; It Must Be Serious; Robert's friends and family call him "Bob" a lot so that he knows it's an emergency when he's called "Robert".
    • Bob's real name isn't actually Robert; in reality, he is the The Unpronounceable. His friends just decided to call him "Bob", so they could actually address him without sounding stupid.
  • Inverted: Robert is called by his real name by everyone. Even his children.
  • Subverted: Robert's friends eventually start calling him by his real name.
    • Bob is actually his legal name.
  • Double Subverted: He doesn't like being called "Robert", so they switch back.
  • Parodied: Robert is so used to being called "Bob", he takes at least 5 seconds to realize someone is talking to him when they call him "Robert."
  • Zig-Zagged:
    • Robert's friends and family call him "Bob" or "Robert" with no discernable pattern.
    • Some of Robert's family members and his closest friends call him Robert; others do not.
  • Averted: Robert is never called "Bob".
  • Enforced: When the creators were writing Robert, they began calling him Bob, and the nickname stuck. This soon followed into the story in universe.
  • Lampshaded: "Sometimes I forget my name is Robert around my friends."
  • Invoked: Do Not Call Me "Paul"
  • Defied: Robert hates being called Bob, and gets triggered if people do it.
  • Exploited:
  • Implied: When Bob is entering his initials after getting the high score on an arcade game, he enters "R" as his first initial, instead of "B".
  • Discussed: "Isn't Robert his real name?" "Well, yeah, but we prefer calling him Bob."
  • Conversed:
  • Deconstructed: Robert gets so used to being called "Bob", he forgets that there are times he simply has to go by his real name...but he doesn't like to be called that. This leads to many awkward situations.
  • Reconstructed: Robert's family start to call him "Robert" more often, to help him get used to it. Eventually, he does.
